“ Laws are made not to be broken, but to curb our savagery” - Toba Beta According, to Toba beta, “ Laws are made not to be broken, but to curb our savagery”. This thought shows how laws play a major role in human’s life. If there are laws made for people, there are some limitations and restrictions(DC,IC). Its limits person’s activities. Limitations stop an individual from doing inadequate things and protect us from evil. It also encourages people to do the right things by limiting freedom of the individual. Limiting the freedom would not let anyone cross their limit. Mr. Beta’s quote is proven true in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies . The characterization in this book and the theme of this novel validates Mr. Beta’s quote. One way William Golding proves this quote true is through characterization. An example of this term in the story can be found in the character of Jack and his group. Jack, Jack’s group (choir), Ralph, and Piggy were on the island; their plane crashed on the island, and they were the only few boys to be alive on that island(IC;IC). Ralph was voted to be the leader, so he made few laws(IC, conj IC). Everyone had to follow that rule; one of those rules was that whoever wants to talk had to hold a conch. First few days, everyone followed his all rules and regulations. Jack was the first one to break the rule. Once in chapter 4, Jack talks without holding conch and breaks the rule for the first time. After he broke one of the rules ,consequently he started breaking all other rules. After Jack had broken the rules, everybody found an interest in breaking the rules. They also started breaking the rules by not holding the conch, not lighting the fire on time, etc.; eventually Jack and his choir started acting like savages. They felt rules are no more important and focus on uncivilized acts of hunting rather than making a civilized
