That is a problem considering Ji-li is descended from a landlord, something her classmates refuse to forget. Even though the protagonist had never met her grandfather, the landlord, and he had died when Ji-li's father was small, she was still discriminated against. For fear of being arrested or worse, the family was forced into getting rid of their wealthier, higher status items. Those include Ji-li's grandmother’s wedding presents, and a beaded wedding dress. Even though the Jiang’s were Muslims they were not discriminated against for it.
Matt now has a son, a good wife, and an ordinary life; he still has a good family life without going to university. In contrast with Kate, although she has good education and job, she doesn’t have her own family and in fact, she says, “I had never thought I would really love anyone.” (89) From another perspective, she seems to be the one that is going to have a sad life. Similar with Luke, when he rejects Sally it is due to his responsibility as a caregiver. He is happy with his decision since it is for his family. If Matt chooses to go to university instead and leaves Marie, he will most likely lose his happiness and truly be an emotionless “nerd” and suffers like Kate who does not truly knows the meaning of love.
So, there are many examples of not thinking for yourself and thinking for youself in this novel. In the novel the main character is Guy Montag and his wife Mildred Montag, and Mildred is the one who should be thinking for herself. She is letting the government get to her head, and everything they say she believes. Even though she is married to Montag, she thinks that the "parlor walls are her family" (Bradbury 49). Montag is her family, but she doesn't consider him as much as a family compaired to the parlor walls.
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front the reader can infer that the narrator Paul Baumer as we know him in the novel is very different from Paul Baumer before he experienced war. He had plans to write a play and a love of literature that was lost after experiencing the horror of life in the trenches. It is shown in his apparent aestheticism, inability to fantasize beyond reality, and his lack of faith in the human race. The things Paul experienced truly changed his life. Throughout the novel Paul seems to leave his emotions behind in order to survive.
Lena’s mother is dead and Marie’s left the family when she was a child. Despite the fact that Marie’s friends and father don’t approve, Lena and Marie become friends. They provide each other with an outlet to discuss issues and feelings they haven’t been able to express before. Lena has a secret about her home life and Marie can’t help her no matter how much she wants to. The author, Jacqueline Woodson, does a tremendous job at flipping stereotypes and allowing others to walk in someone else’s shoes.
She knew that her children will soon leave and have their time in life and spend less and less time with her and that she would just simply stay inside and be alone. She must have been terrified of that. She lost Edward and did not want her daughter Mary to find about that at the moment of her lifetime. Jane was terrified of telling Mary the truth and she might have thought that if she does than Mary will panic and be emotionally hurt for the rest of her life. At the end, Jane seems to be happy that she will soon be able to be to join Edward.
In Walker’s story Dee is so far removed from her family and her sister that the story ends with no hope of resolution. While Dee is trying to forget her past and assume a new identity “Not Dee; Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo”, Maggie is happy with her heritage, in spite of her sister judgments and insults “You should try and make something of yourself Maggie… (Walker 1337) It’s a new day for us but you would never know that from the way you and mama live. The story ends with Dee leaving with her new clothes, new name, nose turned up, and a broken relationship with her family. In Baldwin’s story the narrator (Sonny's brother) initially sees little value in his Sonny however as the story progress he realizes that although Sonny may not have the education and material things that he has, he has a god giving valuable gift (Music) “freedom lurked around us ad I understood that he could help us be free if we listened (Baldwin 80).” And in spite of all the negative things that have occurred in Sonny’s life, through music he is able to rise above it all. This realization creates a newfound bond between the brothers and the stories ends with a promise of a new unbreakable
They do not ever want to show fear. Even after the war, the men still carry the grief of the war. Tim O’Brien carries the image of the young man that he killed, and it haunts him every day. Jimmy Cross tells Tim that he still has no forgiven himself about Ted Lavenders death. “At one point, I remember, we paused over a picture of Ted Lavender, and after a while Jimmy rubbed his eyes and said he’d never forgiven himself for Lavender’s death.
In Night Elie Wiesel and his father are in a concentration camp. His father falls very weak and ill, and it is getting harder to care for him. Elie must make a choice what is worth more- his life or his fathers. Therefore, both main characters have had to make tough choices which leaves both of them with feelings of guilt and
Observant and wise, my mom always said Olga and I had a special connection. Whether it was playing in the backyard or trying to block out her noisy snoring during the night, she was unlike anything else. But as days went on, guilt built up. Our whole family didn’t like to see Olga’s sad, neglected face when we drove away to go on with our daily routines. So after many pleads and pleases to my parents, it wouldn’t just be one bulldog at the Browning household.
