Assignment #4 Comparison/Contrast A comparison/contrast essay tells how two things are similar to (comparison) or different from (contrast) each other. You may use both concepts within the same paper, or you may show only comparison or only contrast. Your thesis statement must make the purpose clear. If you choose to write on ALL SIMILARITIES or ALL DIFFERENCES, your thesis might look like this: Softball and baseball are very different games.” If you choose to include both comparison and contrast in the same paper, your thesis statement might look like this: “To the naked eye, a diamond and a cubic zirconia appear to be identical, but these two stones are actually very different.” Your thesis statement is one sentence only, and it should NOT include your three points of development. . 3. Developmental Paragraphs Since you will write three developmental paragraphs, you could NOT use your first developmental paragraph to cover topic one (e.g. softball) and your second developmental paragraph to cover topic two (e.g. baseball) because then you will have nowhere to go with your third developmental paragraph. Instead, choose three points on which to compare or contrast. For example, a paper on diamonds and cubic zirconias might compare appearance, composition, and cost. Your developmental paragraphs may present all similarities or all differences. However, if you choose to blend comparison and contrast, your first paragraph should develop the UNSTRESSED topic and your next two paragraphs the STRESSED topic. For example, if your thesis is that although there are some similarities, the two topics are mostly different, your first developmental paragraph will present the similarities and your next two the differences. As always, you will begin each paragraph with a TOPIC SENTENCE that will define and limit your paragraph. There are two ways to develop a comparison/contrast paper, however.
