His power was very strong in the beginning of the novel but as Jack began to rebel against Ralph, the rest of the boys went along with him. Jack wanted the power from the beginning of the novel. Jack wanted everyone to vote for him while the other boys nominated Ralph to be their leader. He had a small amount of power with his hunters at the start but as the time on the island progressed, he bribed people with food and threatened them to gain more. Ralph pushed Piggy to one side.
Yet, it is very clear that the novel is greatly inferior. Harry Hook does not quite capture the character of Piggy, fails to include important symbols, and lacks the emphasis of order. First off, the movie portrays Piggy as a whiney and generally useless character. However, the book shows a very different depiction. Piggy is one of the first characters introduced in the novel, and he is described as "the fat boy", which encourages the reader to like him and sympathize towards him, even if nobody else does.
The fact that he is named after him shows he was brought up in a family who agreed with the Southern ideologies. We immediately therefore before he speaks are prejudice against him. As he walks up to the stand he is described as a “little bantam cock”, this shows that he had a confident smugness to him as he strolls up to the stand. This makes the reader not only agitated at him due to his arrogance but also the fact that that he is smug about beating Atticus, who by now in the novel the reader is loyal to. The novel then goes on to describe him as a “red neck” and therefore a labourer who is not entirely civilised.
From the very beginning the conch is shown to us as an example of civilisation. We can relate it back to the gavel in a courtroom. Like the conch, the gavel is used to gain silence and create order amongst on people. When Ralph “…held up the conch for silence,” silence actually fell. The fact that the boys were so in awe of the conch (as a link to what they had left behind) and that they were willing to stop talking and listen proves that the conch, to them, represented home and civilisation with order and rules.
It is important to consider that Piggy’s significance in the story is only in relation to the societal degeneration of the boys on the island. While the truth of this statement is debatable, I believe that your actions are not what defines you; it is the society you belong to that determines your actions. Throughout the novel, Golding shows a progression in the boys’ behaviour from well-behaved, civilized English boys to evil, wild savages. Once the boys land on the island, they begin to become more crazed and less civilized. This is a product of the society they belong to, not the evil that is deep inside them. Since the boys are still relatively young when they crash on the island they lack a certain level of adult maturity; without any sort of adult authority figure, they are more inclined to be out of control.
The reason why the conch shell represents order is because in the lord of flies ralph used it to call the first meeting to order. The conch shell also represents order in a different type of order just like in the book how ralph kept everything in order, everyone had a job and purpose, but as soon as the rules of the conch started to fade away so did the order on the island. The conch shell represents civilization because, when the boys first got on the island ralph and piggy knew they would need to keep everything in order to be able to survive. Then they spot the conch shell at the lagoon and they fish it out of the water. Then ralph and piggy come up with the idea that whoever holds the conch is the only one who is allowed to speak at the meetings.
When Piggy dies, Ralph feels like a part of him is missing when he makes decisions and creates thoughts. “We can use this (the conch shell) to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-“He beamed at Ralph (Page 16) After the group of boys create a small government and elect Ralph as chief, Piggy became an impact on Jack’s character. Jack does not like Piggy because he supports and stands by Ralph.
