Compare the Love Romeo Had for Rosalie and Juliet

Is it all about the chase for Romeo, or is he in it to win the girl? Shakespeare portrays Romeo as a confused teenager who is looking for love, although he seems not to know what love really is. In the beginning of the play, Romeo is distraught over the unrequited love of Rosaline. He is crushed that the girl he loves does not share those feelings. However, he soon falls in deep, passionate, love with Juliet. Was Romeo’s love for Rosaline real? Was it possible that he could fall in love again so quickly or was his feelings for Juliet just a “rebound”? Romeo matures from a boy with his first love experience into a man who understands an unconditional, passionate love for a woman. Romeo believes himself to be in love with this girl he has known for quite some time. His friends Mercutio and Benvolio think his broken heart is a joke. Romeo is still so young and has no idea what true love feels like. Rosaline makes it clear she wants to stay unmarried, which leaves Romeo single. Why doesn’t Romeo ask himself “If she doesn’t want to be with anyone, why do I want to be with her?” It is clearly because he loves the exciting chase of Rosaline. Romeo, so desperately wants her to want him, but if Rosaline did start to fall for Romeo, would he want her as much as he did before? Is he blinded by the desire to be in love? That’s where Juliet Capulet comes in. In an attempt to get Romeo’s mind off of Rosaline, Mercutio and Benvolio beg him to accompany them to a costume affair at the Capulets’ home. On this night, at this party, his eyes meet Juliet’s for the first time. Romeo immediately declares feelings for her, “Forswear it, sight! For I never saw true beauty till this night” (Act 1, Sc. 5). Before the party, Romeo had insisted that no one was more beautiful than Rosaline, but now he has changed his mind; he realizes now that Juliet, not Rosaline, is the essence of true
