Though Romeo has never talked to Juliet, he is determined to seek her out and know if she loves him as well. Romeo refers to Juliet’s beauty on many occasions and swears his love for her mere hours after they meet. Romeo is blinded by love, risking the danger of being caught by the Capulet’s and killed outside of Juliet’s balcony.
His young heart eagerly seeks love, but is so easily distracted and changed. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is deeply in love with Rosaline. Romeo describes to his friends of how lovesick he is, and of the beauty of Rosaline. Romeo describes Rosaline as the “all-seeing sun/ne’er saw her match since first the world begun” and is tormented by his unappreciated love for Rosaline. Benvolio then suggests Romeo to attend a Capulet gathering where Rosaline will be outmatched by other beautiful girls but Romeo says that his affection for Rosaline will not change.
“Romeo and Juliet” is considered by many one of the greatest love stories to have ever been written. However, the tale is not one of love but a story of a young girl whose whims led her to be manipulated by a boy who was seeking out sex. The scene where Romeo and Juliet first meet demonstrates how fickle their infatuation is. The story begins with Romeo wailing over his lost love Rosaline, saying “And, in strong proof of chastity well-armed, from love’s weak childish bow, she lives uncharmed.” He continues his outburst by saying how useless Rosaline is if she is not willing to sleep with him. Benvoilo feels sympathy for the young brokenhearted man and encourages him to go to the Capulet’s party so he will forget the girl.
In this essay, I will be showing a comparison between ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (Shakespeare), ‘To His Coy Mistress’ (Marvel) and ‘Sonnet 130’ (Also by Shakespeare). The first main comparison between these three texts is that they all show different types of love. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is based on true love as both main characters fall in love with each other at first sight. Shakespeare shows their love by the soliloquy and the sonnet that he added to this text as the words and techniques used in them project a connection between Romeo and Juliet. ‘To His Coy Mistress’ shows an idea of a sexual and lustful love.

Friar Lawrence makes fun of Romeo saying that young men only love what they see. They do not love with their hearts but with their eyes and thoughts. Their love is shallow and superficial. He questions whether Romeo shed a single tear for Rosaline before moving on. Friar Lawrence brings out Romeo’s fickle minded nature by showing how he falls in love with a new woman, Juliet, in a very short time frame.
Two of Shakespeare’s most well known plays; ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ are both based on multiple themes of love. Both contain the elements of; love at first sight and love being shallow. Shakespeare’s classic tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’ features two young lovers from feuding families who fall in love and are willing to sacrifice almost anything for their love. Whereas the comedy ‘Much Ado about Nothing’, is about two couples; Benedick and Beatrice, and Claudio and Hero, these couple’s love follow the trend of a love is declared, then challenged, and then is finally reasserted in the harmony of marriage. Claudio and Hero fall in love, break apart, and then fall in love again, while at the same time, Beatrice and Benedick are being tricked into loving each other.

That quote was said by Romeo in the very beginning of the book because he is so love sick over this girl named Rosaline. Throughout the book Romeo and Juliet, both Romeo and Juliet’s perspective on love changes along with their personalities. As I said before in the beginning of the book Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is gloomy and feeling hopeless about love because Rosaline (the women he “loves”) is not going to get married.
One was his quick transition of love from Rosaline to Juliet. After Rosaline rejects Romeo, soon afterwards, at the Capulet’s party, Romeo meets only Juliet briefly yet, immediately declares himself in love with her* If Romeo did not have the flaw of falling in love too quickly and deeply, it would have perhaps, prevented the chaos that would have ensured later on in the story when Juliet and got involved with each other. *“Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till the night.” ( Act 1 scene 5, lines 52 – 53) Another flaw in Romeo’s character was his unpremeditated thinking.
In the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare love is an important theme. In this play, Juliet and Romeo fall in love while Romeo is trying to get over Rosalind and Juliet is having an arranged marriage, their families are also feuding. In Shakespeare's play, Mercutio, Romeo and Juliet all have different views of love. Mercutio’s view of love is very humorous and not true, Romeo’s view of love is hopeless; he likes being in love, but does not like love itself. Lastly, Juliet’s view of love is logical; she does not follow love blindly.
