Daniel Boehni 9-9-12 2nd Literary Analysis Paper In all three of the stories we read somebody or something goes hunting either literally or metaphorically. This contributes highly to the theme of the story. The three books I chose to right about are as follow; “The Open Window” written by Saki, “How Much Land Does a Man Need” written by Leo Tolstoy, and last but not least “Civil Peace” written by Achebe. I chose these three stories to write my paper on because they are all similar in the fact that they all “go hunting” either literal or metaphorical. For example in the story “Civil Peace” Jonathan the main character goes hunting. In this story “hunting” is taken metaphorically because he does not actually go hunting. The Nigerian Civil War just ended and Jonathan is in the hunt to rehabilitate his life and family after the war. After the war Jonathan and his family secure jobs and things began to return to normal. One night Jonathan and his family are robbed. Showing them that doe the war is officially over it still goes on between the people. In the story “The Open Window”, “going hunting” is taken literally because some of the characters do in fact go hunting. In this story the fifteen year old niece tricks the guest into believing that the father son and dog died on a hunting trip and that the wife/mother leaves the window open as if they were to return. But as the story goes they cannot because they’re dead. The aunt enters the room telling the guest to not mind the open window, but she has no idea of the story her niece has told. All of a sudden the guest sees the father, son and dog just as described. He freaks out thinking that the niece’s story has come true and runs off. The aunt is very confused as to why the guest took off as if he had seen ghosts. In the final story “How Much Land Does a Man Need”, “going hunting” is taken
