Curtis Yee Mr. To AP World History 12 March 2011 COMP – The Spanish and Ottoman Empires During the age of global expansion, two major empires would begin to take shape. Between 1450-1800 the Ottoman and Spanish would build their empires through the way they treated their slaves, their religious tolerance, and the way they administered their empires. The two empires would have very different views on religious tolerance. The Ottomans were open to all forms of religion. Even the capital city of Istanbul was filled with a large Christian population as well as a large Muslim population.
Unlike Saudi Arabia today, East Asian women bind their feet to make them appeal more attractive to men. In Western Europe women had more freedom; women were allowed to hold more high ranking positions. They were also able to coerce men into political aqcuistions (some women were heavily involved in politics even though they couldn’t hold office). Anne Boeyln, King Henry VIII second wife was one of the few who actually cared about politics;she was eventually beheaded but her legacy lives on because she was able to make Henry divorce Catherine of Aragon. Western European women were more civilized and were able to voice their thoughts, even though they weren’t able to hold office they were extremely valued in advice on political matters but not matters of war.
In the Mongol empire, women had more rights compared to China’s women. The Aztec women too had more rights. Women were able to be priestesses in temples, teachers, and traders in the Aztec Empire. Because the Mongol and Aztec men were strong military wise, their women had more freedom than most. Culturally, the Aztecs and the Mongols were different, specifically with their religions.
The Quran outlined several different methods of treating women in its various passages. The Quran always stated to provide the wife with equal rights of the male; “Wives have the same rights as the husbands have on them in accordance with the generally known principles.” The Quran also stated to allow a man as many wives as he please, however on the condition that he do no injustice to any of them. These provisions set forth by the Quran make it rather strange, the way females are treated currently in many Islamic countries and the social standing assigning to women. (docs 2,4) Strangely contradictory to the fairness in rights provided to women, women were oft discriminated against, and many Islamic thinkers and writers condoned unfair treatment to women, including Muhammad himself. Sunna wrote that women are imperfect, derived from the imperfections of man, and that if man were to correct that, he would destroy the woman.
From the beginning, wifehood and motherhood have been regarded as a women’s profession. They were not seen as breadwinners or professionals. As history has told us, women were considered the weaker sex, doing jobs such as laundry, milking cows, and taking care of children, leaving the “heavier” labor to the big strong men (wic.org). With technological advancement today, physiological test suggest women have a greater pain tolerance and statistics show that women live longer and are more resistant to many diseases. In the 20th century, women in most nations won the right to vote, this in return increased their educational and job opportunities.
The Phoenicians were a peaceful people focused on trade and had a somewhat balanced legal system. The Assyrians were ruthless warriors ruled by a king that were focused on expanding their empire. Even though both these two communities were very different, they both had successful time periods and lead great
* In many of the Muslim countries, it is not only the woman who have barely any rights, but also the men are treated the same. It is not the religion to which treats women unfairly , but it is the government oppression of men. * People are under the idea that Islam teachings do encourage the oppression of woman, but in fact the teachings of Muhammad enforce men to respect the rights of women. * The Qur’an states ‘woman shall have rights similar to those of men’. But in the west this statement is misinterpreted which shows specific issues and differences.
Gender Roles in Society and Marriages The term gender is identified by scholars as a major tool in the definition of differences between men and women. Many researchers argue that gender has always been set in all societies. Unquestionably, each religion and continent has their own practices in their religion and their own culture. However, all of these religions and places have many similarities when it comes to their gender roles in society and marriages. Initially, the Middle East has many religions, but the largest religion practiced is Islam.
In addition to that, Arabic calligraphy is also a reflection of the cultural values of the Muslim world and it symbolizes a lot of different things such as beauty, unity, and power. Moreover, the artistic differences between Arabic and non-Arabic calligraphy can explain the cultural differences between Arabs and non Arabs. Arabic calligraphy is a very important thing in Islam to the extent that even the ka’ba which the most important sanctuary in Islam is fully decorated with Arabic letters of the divine message of the Quran. Other places such as wall surfaces, mosque furniture, the exteriors and exteriors of mosques, tombs are also ornamented with the dazzling letters of the Arabic and the Islamic calligraphy. Not only do those words look beautiful, but also their meanings have extraordinary strength and inspirational importance.
Ashwin Naglla HIST 3704 Professor Azimi November 10, 2010 Quran: Significance in the Lives of Muslims As early Arab conquerors spread Islam outside of Arabia, they established an expansive and rich culture. Islamic civilization soon encompassed the core Middle East and spread west to Spain and as far east to the Indus River. The Islamic world developed a common culture highly influenced by the Quran. This holy book was the root of many social and cultural norms in the lives of Muslims historically and today, including treatment of false beliefs and equality between men and women. The Quran says a lot about treatment of false belief.
