Compare and Contrast Paper October 6, 2013 Cancer of any kind is devastating news to have to receive. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or yourself, the word cancer brings many frightening thoughts and images into people’s minds. Cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer cells are also malignant cells. There are many types of cancer, and it can affect many different parts of the body. Two cancers that may bring confusion to some people because of the similarity in name is Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. With this type of lymphoma though, tumors develop from lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is more common than Hodgkin’s lymphoma. There are many different subtypes of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The most common include diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma. Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are similar to those of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and include swollen lymph nodes in your neck, armpits, or groin, abdominal pain or swelling, chest pain, coughing, or trouble breathing, fatigue, fever, night sweats and weight loss. As with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, doctors are not sure what causes this disease. This lymphoma occurs when your body produces too many abnormal lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Normally lymphocytes go through a cycle when old ones die and are replaced by new ones. In Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, your lymphocytes don’t die, but continue to grow and divide.
