Donalvin Weatherby August 16, 2011 U.S. History Hour 7 Differences in Colonization In the early years after Columbus’ “discovery” of America European countries felt the urge to settle in this new area. They hoped to find new resources and expand their own empires in these lands. The three major empires trying to utilize this area were France, Spain, and England but they all had different ways of colonization. In this paper I will tell you the similarity and differences between each country’s different styles of colonization. I also will tell of the country’s different relationships with the Natives. First I am going start with the colonization style of Spain. Spain focused mostly on colonizing the northern part of South America and southern America. Such areas as Mexico, Peru, and Florida were of the popular places were Spanish ships landed. But they eventually settled in what is now Canada and Louisiana like the Spanish they were searching for converts to Christianity. France colonized using alliances, farming, and trade. They unlike the Spanish were allies with the Natives who helped them with attacks from Iroquois. The French allied the Natives for fur and used them as hunters. The French received most of their profits from the fur trade. Though this profitable business boomed the French colonies had trouble growing in population. The reason being the areas France settled had bad weather conditions and they also just like Spain suffered from diseases.
