Death comes in a variety of ways, pride and honorship towards ones own being. As opposite as light and darkness, The Montagues and The Capulets in “ Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare often share too much pride, causing looking down on each others family and affecting a decision which would later result as a tragedy with the lack of responsibility. Friar Laurence seen as a confiding person wanted the two families to come together, but with the turnout of events, he is contemplated for the
Touchstone is a character who has an individual opinion on the idea of love. His idea is unromantic, but practical. This can be seen in the following quote, “ by how much defence is better than no skill, by so much is a horn more precious than to want.” In this quote, touchstone implies that it is better to be cheated on rather than to have no woman at all and go on unsatisfied. This shows his practicality and also shows how he is quite selfish when it comes to love. “ he is not like to marry me well and, not being well married it will be a good excuse for me hereafter to leave my wife” , this quote illustrates his unromantic portrayal of love, as he is willing to go through great measures to avoid being tied down to one woman.
Margarita is a complex character, but represents what is Good in world. “Genuine goodness consists in daring and doing; and in doing the right thing.” (Carus 590) The only thing Margarita is guilty of is her devotion to a lover, The Master, whom she ultimately leaves her husband for, because that is the right thing. Why that may not seem like the right thing to do, she was able to justify her actions. “We must abandon the old standpoint of negativism that goodness consists in not doing certain things which are forbidden.” (Carus 590) She acknowledges the fact that her husband was a good man, who treated her right – but for her to stay with him would be strictly based on what was “morally
The values of the main characters Mr. and Mrs. Odone were evident in the movie as love, hardworking and perseverance. These are the values the movie wishes us to see. The parents completely disregarded what there own child would want. It was what they felt he wanted. The boy may have wanted an end to his suffering.
The next similarity both Oedipus and Othello shared is their passionate love for their family. Oedipus loved and cared for his family despite what the blind prophet had foretell him of his fate but he didn’t care for his own sake. As for Othello, he loved his wife Desdemona so much and he was so passionate about it too. There are two examples that showed Oedipus and Othello their passionate love for their family. The first example, the ending of Oedipus the King was when Oedipus was kneel to the ground and ashamed in the
He is thinking of the common good and not the personal convenience. Brutus’ leading quality is honour, and he is not prepared to act in a way that brings him dishonour. Because of this virtue, many Romans regard him with great respect. On the other hand, Brutus is one of Caesar’s closest friends, and this he admits in his speech delivered at the burial of his dead body, ‘Not that I loved Caesar less but that I loved Rome more.’ It is the biggest contradiction in Brutus’ conduct besides the other inconsistencies found in his character. When he decides to side with the conspirators, was Brutus in possession of any solid evidence to convince him that Caesar would become a tyrant in the event of his being the dictator of Rome for life?
Morrie deteaches himself so that he can accept these predicaments in his life and so that he will be able to embrace his deathe easier since he’s well aware that it’s approaching. A quote Morrie constantly refers is to “Love each other or die”. He stresses this quote and major theme in the novel because he feels that an abundance of love and compassion is the highest sense of fulfillment that one can experience; especially because Morrie had such a significant lack of both love and compassion throughout his childhood. Love is so crucial to Morrie as he is nearing his final days of life because he feels that without the care of those who love him, he would perish. Morrie is not afraid of dying, however
Thus, More’s Utopia is a sternly righteous and puritanical state, where only a few of us would feel happy; this is because the communal way of life and the laws of the state forbid its citizens to have absolute personal liberty, which is essentially the main ingredient of happiness. The laws of the Utopian society place really harsh and irrational restrictions on the people in terms of the fundamental choices of life. For instance, when choosing an occupation, the son must practice the same trade as his father. “But if anyone is attracted to another occupation, he is transferred by adoption into a family practicing the trade he prefers.” (Utopia p.45) Thus, a person has to give up his family and the bonds he shared with them just to pursue a profession of his own choice. However, it still does not guarantee him a free choice.
He is obviously biased against his father and wants his mother’s sole attention. This point of view provides humor because Larry thinks that he actually belongs in his father’s place, as his mother’s sole companion. Sexuality is involved in the story’s humor because the boy sees his mother as a spouse and he thinks that they can have children together. 3. Larry calls it irony that his prayers were answered because he prayed that his father would return from the war, and when his father actually returns from the war, he wishes that he would leave again.
If we get to this first stage we may well run up against love as an obstacle, particularly in believing that in order to have the love of some other we must give up our own Personal Legend and live in a way that the other needs for us. On the author’s view this is a mistaken notion of love. “You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend. If he abandons that pursuit it’s because it wasn’t true love, the love that speaks the Language of the World.” Supposing one gets past that second stage and realizes love is not incompatible with one’s Personal Legend, then one is likely to run into grave difficulties in realizing this legend and be tempted to give up. It is just too hard.
