The troops were citizens known as the Spartiates, the superior social class of Sparta; the others were the Helots, who were slaves and the Perioeci who were the upper-slave-class. Spanning over the late archaic period and classical Greece, the Spartan army fought in phalanx formation with very little support until 404 BC, when they were formed into a cavalry corps. The first reference there is of the Spartans at war is the Illiad. Archeology has shown many important areas of it to be true. It shows the Spartans as chariot warriors, and infantry who fought for glory.
Big Fat Greek Contributions Ancient Greece was one of the most advanced civilizations that have ever dominated on earth. The Greeks had a knack for exploring and believed that “the unexamined life was not worth living,” motivating them to create amazing concepts (Document 1). In the 500 years that they thrived, the intelligent yet curious Greeks were able to discover and develop many things that have truly impacted Western civilization. Because the Greeks have contributed to us their ideas for government, knowledge in math and science, and their culture, Western civilization is the way that it is today. Firstly, the Greeks were the ones that came up with a democratic form of government.
Gerione is a supporting role to Canto 17. He uses Tiresias in Canto 20 to explain the soothsayers. Finally Dante uses Minos as a beastly guard and judge in the 5th Canto. The use of the mythical figures in his story is appropriate because it illuminates his ideas as well as shows respect to the creators of the mythology who have fully developed the characters. The Old Man of Crete was a mythical statue on the ancient Greek island.

Trojan War- Myth or Legend Paige Gillham The Trojan War is one of the greatest Greek stories that comprise of a great war containing a thousand ships that set sail to claim what was taken from them, one of the most beautiful women Helen of Troy. Written by the Greek poet Homer, the great story has been a debate of myth and legend for many centuries. Not only was the Iliad written 500 years after the great Trojan War, it was meant for entertainment purposes and not as historical evidence which can question is liability and truth. Though there is nothing to say that the whole Iliad is myth, Homer may have based his poetry on a real historical event that could have taken place and that may well have been a great war between Troy and the Greeks. Archaeological evidence claims that it has found Troy in one of 9 different layers at one hillside site first discovered by Heinrich Schliemann.
Gwyneth Roberts says in her article about Nineteen Eighty-Four that, “Some of Orwell’s Newspeak vocabulary (Newspeak itself, Big Brother, doublethink) has entered the English language; certainly his vision of a drab totalitarian future has entered the general consciousness, although it is difficult to know whether his warning [have] been fully understood” (Roberts). George Orwell's dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, presents his defeatist perspective on modern society formed by his experiences in life, his experiences in the historical wars which he participated in, and his knowledge of Joseph Stalin. Many characteristics of Nineteen Eighty-Four put it under the dystopian genre, but two continuously stand out: a worshipped figurehead and a dehumanized state. Big Brother, the worshipped figure of Nineteen Eighty-Four has a, “is [always] watching you” (Orwell 6) every citizen of Oceania with a strong, “black mustachio’d face” (Orwell 6) and, “dark eyes” (Orwell 6) that look deep into the soul. This more symbolic than physical leader represents the face of the party, also the antagonist group of Nineteen Eighty-Four, who ultimately control Oceania.
The first Ionian philosophers were called cosmologist because they sought to discover the underlying principles of the universe. 594 BC: Solon, the Reformer was elected chief executive of Greece. Solon initiated a ration approach to the problems society by deemphasizing the gods’ role in human affairs and attributing the city’s ills to the specific behavior of individuals such as wealthy land owners. 546 BC:
Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, which was published in 1818 on the basis of a dare to write a horror story, introduces many controversial issues; issues that were controversial in her time as they meddle with life and creation and question whether or not people are born as evil beings. This was a time when society, disrupted by the French revolution 20 years earlier, looked to science for certainty. Victor Frankenstein, a determined scientist, a man with a good childhood, in pursuit of his selfish desires; brought about his own downfall. These issues still resonate in the present time. Victor Frankenstein was very interested in the creation of life from a young age, and worked hard to find an answer.
Although Fahrenheit 451 was written nearly sixty years ago, it serves as a warning to present day people about the danger of a technological take over. The author of this novel used a science fiction novel to portray his opinion of how the world would be if people constantly worship advancing technology and increasing knowledge. Science fiction stories tell about the future by blending scientific data and theory with the author’s creative imagination. In Fahrenheit 451, the author, Ray Bradbury, reversed the roles of present day heroes and community leaders. He also altered the purpose and reason of the life in future America if things don’t human continue to let technology overpower them.
The Ancient Greeks dared to wonder and imagine about unknown things, and their literature and art awed the world. Greece was established in about 750 B.C., and was considered to be the culture that provided the foundation of western civilization. Education was obviously very important in these various Greek city-states. With the exception of Sparta, education was one of the most valued things in Greece. The goal of education in ancient Greece was to produce citizens trained in the arts of both peace and war (http://www.crystalinks.com).
