Communications in Homeland Security Communication in Homeland Security hasn’t been very successful for example, with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and other agencies which has been an ongoing issue when a disaster/attack strikes. I’m going to discuss the various communication issues with the different agencies like FEMA including the public which will be more explored because of the recent disaster. I will discuss how both agencies work together, a little of each history and the communication and disconnect. Before 9/11 there wasn’t really much of a good source of communication and still there are many problems they are facing today. Both have progressed but not significantly but have added strategic goals and plan in case of any more attacks on the U.S. or natural disasters. Communication is they key in any given situation, this is how things are properly done in a timely response, planning goes through the right channels, leave nothing to chance. Because FEMA did not have sound operations to begin with, it only added to the headache of trying to come up with a core disaster management organization which made the communication cease. Because there have been so many problems with FEMA and DHS in the past, it has led the federal government to examine their options in creating a better organizational solution. The federal government is now looking to solutions such as changing federal law to give the president authority to order federal assistance in the absence of requests from state governors, enlarging the role of the Department of Defense and other federal departments for domestic emergency response, and removing FEMA from DHS and have its director report directly to the President (Majors 2008). As of today DHS has shown inadequate interest in communicating with the public and when the results are in, it hasn’t always been positive for example, FEMA unsuccessful communication in Hurricane Katrina. DHS and its State and local partners need to address these factors to improve its communicating with the American people (Bullock, J., Haddow, G., & Coppola, D. 2012 pg.
