Communication and Collaboration Strategy

Learning is a lifelong process. How an individual learns varies from one person to another. Based on unique make-up, perceptions, awareness, environment and experiences, two or more people can learn the same information from different perspectives and through different learning styles. Different learning styles among group or team members require a communication and collaboration strategy in order to facilitate constructive functioning of group or team activities and the productive completion of group or team goals. The Multiple Pathways of Learning Assessment identifies eight learning intelligences: Body-Kinesthetic, Visual-Spatial, Musical, Interpersonal, Verbal-Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Intrapersonal and Naturalistic. The Personality Spectrum Assessment identifies four personality types: Thinker, Giver, Adventurer and Organizer. The focus of this paper will be three from each group. According to Professor Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, individuals have strengths and preferences in each of the eight areas that comprise his theory. “As defined by Gardner, an intelligence is an ability to solve problems or fashion products that are useful in a particular cultural setting or community” (Carter & Joyce Bishop, 2007, pp. 38-39). A team or a group is comprised of much individual diversity, which requires good communication and mutual collaboration to determine how each member can effectively contribute to the accomplishment of the group or team goals. Intelligences: Verbal-Linguistic The Verbal-Linguistic learner communicates through language and finds it easy to express their self both verbally and in writing. This type of learner is a good listener and generally an excellent speaker, skilled at explaining, remembering information and convincing others of their point of view (Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligence).
