International House Bangkok Cambridge ESOL CELTA Assignment 1 – Focus on the Learners Done by: Jonathan Yip Section A. For this assignment, my TP group of students is from the Intermediate level. The Intermediate level students all have different backgrounds, learning experiences and learning styles. They however do have some common learning styles preferred, the parts of speech to be taught and corrected, and the language skills to improve. The TP class consists of about twelve students but usually about nine students turn up on each lesson day. They fall within the age range of 18 – 36 years. The group diversity also extends to their nationalities consisting majority of: Thais, two from Sri Lanka and one from Japan. The students in the class with similar ages and nationalities tend to communicate more with each other. However, from our findings the majority of the students have mentioned that their main form or primary motivation to learn English is make them qualified for a job or university and others want to settle in other countries such as Canada and Australia due to family being there already or for opportunities advancing a career overseas where English is the main language. The findings show that the students have similar previous learning experience in school. Being a strict lecture based approach, focusing on grammar and passive learning with less emphasis on language. The students shared that there was a lack of speaking activities to incorporate what they have learnt and they were always doing writing and tests at their past schools. The learning styles of the students that we found out during the interview and over the couple of weeks were that they preferred activities that use a combination of kinesthetic, visual and interpersonal styles in the English lesson. Although their specific needs vary, the majority show the need for improvement
