Over the winter break, I read a particularly good book, I read “Catching Fire” by Suzane collins. Catching fire is the sequel to “The Hunger Games,” another great book I had the privilege of reading. The book begins a month or two after the events of the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen, the main protagonist of the series, has won the 74th annual hunger games, a barbaric contest in which two children from each of 12 Districts in the country of Panem, are sent to the Capitol to train in the art of killing. The 24 tributes are then placed in an arena and forced to fight to the death. All the while, every second of the games are televised on every television throughout the country. Katniss, along with her male tribute, Peeta Mellark, have won the games and have returned to their homes in District 12, a small coal mining community known as “The Seam.” A lot has happened since Katniss and Peeta’s victory in the arena. There is talk of revolution as they embark on their victory tour of the districts. When they arrive in District 8, the district Katniss’ ally, Rue, came from, she feels nothing but sympathy for her family and for the family of Thresh, the male tribute from District 8 who spared her life in the arena. After Peeta and Katniss gave their speeches, an old man in the crowd whistled a simple four note tune. It was the tune Rue used in the arena to let Katniss know she was safe. Afterwards, when they are being escorted out, they witness the old man be publicly executed on the very steps they gave their speeches. Afterwards they are rushed out of the District. When Katniss and Peeta return home to 12, Katniss tries to patch things up with Peeta. Peeta had Declared his love for her on live television at the capitol the night before the games. Katniss’ mentor, Haymitch, told her that she had to pretend to be in love
