In contrast to Mayella, Tom Robinson was treated as if he were not worth anything, for example he was being called Boy, big buck, when he was being questioned. When Mr Gilmer asked for Tom’s reason for helping Mayella, Tom admitted he had felt sorry for her. “ ‘.. I felt sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em-‘ ..‘You felt sorry for her, you felt sorry for her?’ Mr Gilmer seemed ready to rise to the ceiling”. (Page 217/218) No black man should feel sorry for a white person.
Since he is more weak spirited than Hester, as shown in “His spirit lacked the strength that could have borne up, as thine has been, beneath a burden like thy scarlet letter," (ch.14) The letters weight affects him more. The man suffers physically more than any other character in the novel. He fasts vigorously until he grows so weak he almost cannot stand, “It was his custom, too, as it has been that of many other pious Puritans, to fast, - not, however, like them...but rigorously, and until his knees trembled beneath him, as an act of penance”. (ch. 11) He would even whip himself at night, “bloody scourge… plied on his own shoulders.” to punish himself for the sin he committed.
He literaly went isan, killing his mother to have sexual intercourse with her. He was messed up and gross. Nero as a kid was unsocial, fat, and weird. He tried to stay away from people and stayed by himself, I personally think that’s why he became that man he was. Another weakness that Nero had was his pride.
Due to the fact that he has not slept in nine days, he falls asleep on the tenth night because of exhaustion and minding the sail for all of the days. “As soon as I fell asleep, the men started to talk…” (Book 10, 41) Odysseus says. His crew begins to further question what is in the bag and they begin to think that Aeolus has secretly given Odysseus a bag of fortune in gold and silver. With this thought, they become exceedingly greedy. They tear open the bag and the winds are released, blowing the ship back to Aeolia.
But Troy cannot put the pressure of his job behind him. Because he continues to witness blatant discrimination on his job and in other aspects of his daily existence, he harbors a deep-seated disgust for the racism of his country. For example, he fumes over the fact that all of his coworkers who lift garbage cans are black, and all who drive the trucks are white. But garbage collecting is one of the few professions now open to Troy. Although a top-notch baseball player during the Negro League's heyday, by 1957, he is too old to play on a desegregated Major League team.
The Envy of the World: The Portrayal of Black Men in America Patrice R. Gill- Clay Capella University Abstract The Envy of the World With the number of obstacles they confront--from the dangers of drugs, gangs and other criminal elements to still-prevalent forms of institutionalized racism such as racial profiling--young African-American males face harrowing times (Jeffers,2001). In today’s society the African American male is considered as violent, uneducated, lazy, and aggressive. The portrayal from media and film does not work toward improving their images either. Negative stereotypes have dominated the images of African American males and their role in society. Even when there are displays of positive and successful African American
Olaf was a merchant sailor just like Jim when he was younger; the only problem with Olaf was the color of his skin and his intimidating size. While a merchant sailor, Olaf did not have a problem with what race his fellow sailors were on the ship. Jim’s sheer size and race set off his racial hatred towards Jim. Olaf feels helpless because of his age. Before Jim departs, he puts his hand on Olaf’s neck; Olaf thinks Jim will snap off his head any moment now.
How far was Wolsey arrogant and unpopular? (20 marks) Sources 1, 2 and 3 all agree that Wolsey was cocky and despised as source 1 says ‘arrogance and ambition roused the hatred of the whole people,’ this shows that due to his arrogance he grew more and more unpopular against the ‘whole’ people. This shows that a lot of varieties of people over the different classes do not like Wolsey because of his ‘arrogance and ambition.’ Source 2 agrees with this as it states ‘brings them such fear’ which shows that he considers himself to be better than the nobles’ which makes him arrogant also as they ‘fear’ him it is likely that they also despise him as you normally dislike the things you fear. Source 3 also agrees with the view that he was despised as it states ‘he makes the lawyers plead without payment for all paupers’. This shows that he is highly unpopular with lawyers as he believes if they do not do their job properly they should be fined however lawyers are the only category which state that he is un-liked compared to the ‘whole people’.
Humour is used very often throughout. Every near disaster that Farley has with his boat is always a comedic event, he talks of being drunk and trying to navigate into a harbour at night in a thick black fog laughing and scared out of his mind, “The Newfoundland Pilot Book informed us that the harbour was complicated, with off-lying dangers, and that it should not be entered unless one took aboard a pilot. Furthermore it should not be entered even in daylight, unless one possessed local knowledge. The book said nothing about what should not be done at night, in a black fog, by perfectly good intoxicated strangers.”(165) They nearly crash the boat several times but they always laugh it off
Holden was bored and wide awake in his hotel room in New York. Holden decided to go to the bar and hang out but in the elevator the worker offers him a prostitute, Holden decided that he should so he talked his way into something he did not really want. Even today these two things that Holden got into are unacceptable, a minor smoking and buying a prostitute. The reader knows that The Catcher in the Rye is for a younger but mature audience because of how Holden acts throughout this book. The reason for this thesis is because of how he acts and the decisions or situations could be taken the wrong way
