Stephen: Slide 1: Romero House- Toronto Refugee Community Non-Profit Homes and Services Michael: Slide 2: General Information Romero House is a community that has four houses and a community centre in the west end of Toronto. The Romero House was founded in 1992, and has provided housing, settlement and advocacy services to more than 4,500 singles and families. Romero House was named after the Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. They are a registered charitable organization. 10% the donations are from the government. There are many different groups of people who make up their community: residents of the four houses, those who work and volunteer there, neighbors in the "West Bend" area of Toronto, former residents of Romero House who stay involved, and many supporters. Romano: Slide 7: Why we Need Immigrants Canada needs immigrants because they are different, and that something extra they add to the country helps the economy, culture and society. They are hard-working people because they want to have a better life for themselves or their families. It takes courage to raise your self in search of a better life in a bigger/better community. Those with the most bravery have the most to gain. Michael: Slide 8: Moving Out! Romero House helps successful refugee’s to apply for permanent residence and they pay for half of the associated fees ($550 per adult and $150 per child) from donated funds.
