ENGL 1311 16 September 2013 “The River” It was a hot day to be on the Guadalupe River for Memorial Day weekend. My family and I loaded up the truck, filled the cooler with cold drinks, packed our swim suits, and headed out. The water seemed warm, you could smell the burgers on the grill, kids were playing and the sun was blazing. You can say it was a perfect time to be out with the family enjoying each other’s company. The river is about 230 mi long.
As a child, every fall, my parents would take me and my siblings camping. Dad worked a lot, so we counted down the days of summer, until we got to be together. Every breath I took was like I was inhaling my childhood. I could hear the waves bouncing off the rocks as we sat on the patio and had lunch. The smell of the water and the warmth that touched my skin, when the sun peeked through the clouds, took me back in time to the campground.
Trout Lake is located near the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, surrounded by massive white birch and maple tress, beautiful meadows, and crystal clear water, so clear you can almost see the bottom. It was a place to get away from everyday life, for the weekend or just for a week or two. Trout Lake holds a special place in my heart and I have some really fond memories of spending time there. It's a place where memories are made, like the first time I learned how to swim, the family BBQ'S, sitting around the campfire roasting hotdogs and marshmallow's for s'mores, and holidays, especially the Fourth of July. Spending time at Trout Lake changed my perspective on what the "word" family means.
William Geist Gribble English 1101 17 January 2012 Stranded For the past forty years now my family has been renting out these cabins at a place called Silver Birch Resort in Batchawana Bay Ontario. That is where fear and I met on a collision course with one another. The most terrifying day of my life began, with waking up to the sun rising across the Bay of Lake Superior, hearing the local loons fishing for the minnows in the lake, and walking over to grab breakfast at the local diner. There usually isn’t enough room in the cabins so my cousin Jesse and I have been sleeping out on the beach since we were about ten years old. During our breakfast feast we all decided that the plan for the day was going to be a four wheeling trip
For me, it is a fun filled day of drinking watered down beer and eating cheap hotdogs with the guys. Yes, it may sound lackluster to many but to us, to me, it is bliss. The day starts early in the morning, an eight o’clock train into Chicago, hot coffee in hand we talk
His mom was always cautious every year and tie a rope around Wolf’s wrist and then would let him go into the water, he hated this! Go, go said dad, always encouraging him to do things, especially many different ways to protect himself. Fred liked going to the auto races and going to his dads bowling club. His dad taught him to hold on to things for a long time, and showed him what things do and how they work. He enjoyed riding over to the next town called Zell an der Mosel with his dad on bikes to attend synagogue services.
In July of 2010 I became homeless so Chevy and I lived out of my car. During the day we’d go to parks and walk trails, our favorite was walking downtown St. Paul along the river. At night we’d share dinner; his favorite was when he got my crust from Little Ceasar’s. Then he’d curl up in the front seat, and I’d stretch out in back for the night. Chevy’s been with me for 7 years, and I hope to have many more with
Ever since I was a little boy, my family and I have gone to Lovewell Lake every summer. I have endless memories there. Thats why, I’ve decided to take you there. Lovewell State Park contains many winding roads that lead to the different camping grounds. We always camp in the Cottonwood campgrounds.
Immediately after the break, we took the direction of the water park. At that moment the temperature was in the 80 degree. My family and I, were so hot and couldn’t wait to refresh ourselves in the cool water, we walked about half mile before we reached the water park. We went to the locker to put on ours swimming wears and my kids jumped first in the water. The water being cool for my wife and me, we were hesitant to enter on it.
The summer before my junior year I experienced the best week of my life. Deep in the beautiful mountains of Colorado about 12 hours away is a place called Frontier Ranch, a Young Life camp. The excitement and overwhelming happiness before getting on the bus for the long ride is what keeps us all sane. As I say goodbye to my parents and friends staying home, the only thing I can think about is having the opportunity to get away for a week: without a phone, computer, or television and growing in my relationships not only with my friends but with Jesus as well. After the long 12 hour drive I can feel the suspense and and thrill all around me.
