Kody Woerner Mrs. Zauner Contemporary English 10 October 2013 Courage is everything War, terrible war. When you first think of war, what do you think of? If you are anything like me you would think of the horrors that war brings. In the book Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden, the American military is in Somalia to take down a ruthless dictator who takes food hostage from the people of his country causing mass famine. A group of rangers goes in to the town to take down two of the dictator’s right hand men. While going in for the mission two of the black hawks sent in get shot down and now the military has to go into the war zone and search for survivors. While all of the military sent in are vital to this mission, there are three men who stand out the most from this crowd. Once Durant and the other pilot had come to in the crash, they were retrieved by two friendly soldiers, before they knew what was happening, they were ambushed by a mob of the militia and Durant was forced to run to a nearby building, he was quickly surrounded by the mob. Mo’alim grabbed Durant from the crowd and told everyone to stay away and to not hurt him. He was more valuable alive to him. They took him hostage and made a videotape of him and showed it to the world. He was then visited by a person that would write a letter for him, he was also visited by two reporters. It was important that Durant remain courageous, not just for himself but for the public and his fellow soldiers. He was moved once again.
