Biomedical Advances in Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy Abstract The number of Alzheimer’s patients has increased over the past decade, so has the research for its cure. Clinical trials for anti-dementia drugs have progressed in effectiveness and some that are currently available to patients that can help with short-term relief of symptoms. Donepezil is considered to be the most effective thus far; researchers have studied its effects when combined with other anti-dementia drugs leading to innovative results. The reason why the drastic progression of Alzheimer’s disease occurs after the onset of symptoms is the first missing key to its cure. The use of new bio-technological tools let physicians and researchers assess the severity of the…show more content…
Researchers have determined that people that have type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. (Faivre, 2013) Over the last decade, it has been determined that there are many similar physiological aspects between Alzheimer’s and type II diabetes. With an increasing knowledge of their physiological aspects, comes a vast opportunity for treatment that may prevent or even cure the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. (Faivre, 2013) The most important aspect is that type II diabetes shows a disturbance in insulin signaling and Alzheimer’s disease shows a desensitization of insulin receptors. (Faivre, 2013) The necessity of insulin and its insulin receptor (IR) in the body is vital for cell development, growth, and repair. Insulin receptors are commonly found in the…show more content…
