I know I couldn’t but I guess that’s where bravery kicks in for this well-known hero name Beowulf. Beowulf is very wise and i stick with my statement because he thinks before he talk or do anything. Like with Grendel, the whole entire land of the kings’ men was trying their hardest to kill him. But Beowulf stayed up all and analyzed Grendel as he killed one the men. He prepared for every fight thoroughly.
He didn’t fail any of his battles but dies in his last battle and the dragon as well. “Hail King Beowulf!” Beowulf was a Geat warrior who faced Evil monsters. In his first battle, he is the good because he fought the evil he sailed to Hrothgar’s kingdom to fight the monster. The battle with the evil mind of Grendel’s mother who seeked revenge for her son. It was Good vs.
In the poems Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the protagonists Beowulf and Sir Gawain demonstrate the characteristics of a hero. Courage is the one of the important characteristics that the great hero must be. When compared and contrasted, the two characters portray the quality in their own way. In the poem Beowulf, the main character, Beowulf is an incredible person who is willing to defeat anyone to keep his people safe. When Beowulf hears about the evil monster, Grendel, terrorizing King Hrothgar's people, he agrees to fight Grendel without hesitation.
Lastly, when he and his men ambush the dragon Beowulf fights until his dying breath. Beowulf does these things , not for a prize, but to better portray his image of being a great hero and well known for his deeds. No doubt, Beowulf is a great man who shows characteristics of an epic hero. He is brave, obligated and committed, and does these great tasks for the greater being of society. He did
The poet refers to Beowulf saying, “There was no one else like him alive. / In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, / highborn and powerful” (ll.196-198). This clearly states his very special role and his importance to those who need help defending themselves. One could say that with such power it is his duty to fight these monsters and save the kingdom. Beowulf is aware of his duty, and whether he likes it or not, he is obligated to live for the sole purpose of winning battles and fighting monsters to save those who are weaker than he.
We can see that Beowulf shows courage when he is going to go fight Grendel. Beowulf gains leadership when he leads his men to victory over Grendle. He shows that he has power because he defeated a monster that nobody could defeat. Although Beowulf was undefeated, he came back one hundred years later to fight a dragon, but he failed and died. This can relate to many people in our society.
Emily Schwartz Mrs. Srinivasan English II Honors 14 October 2011 A Prevalent Leader In the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf, the epitome of heroism, proves himself a suitable opponent against the demon, Grendel. Beowulf characterizes fearlessness and strength when battling fearsome enemies. Beowulf, the heroic protagonist, enters the village and addresses Hrothgar, a king, and his people with noble confidence for the upcoming battle he wishes to fight in. Dripping with my enemies’ blood I drove Five great giants into chains, chased All of that race from the earth. I swam In the blackness of night, hunting monsters Out of the ocean, and killing them one By one (153-158) Beowulf proves fearlessness; he can defeat any possible rival that faces him.
Beowulf, the Geatish warrior is slayer off the monstrous beast Grendel. Beowulf wields supernatural strength, he's quick, cunning and equal. Beowulf believes in fighting on equal terms as his opponent “so it won't be a cutting edge I wield”. This is something the other heroes didn’t demonstrate. He is fearless attacking Grendel without hesitation, he is the only man capable of afflicting damage to the beast.
The warrior Beowulf is “the strongest of the Geats … stronger than anyone anywhere in this world…” Beowulf’s strength is obvious to Grendel during their battle. "That shepherd of evil, guardian of crime knew at once that nowhere on earth had he met a man whose hands were harder.” Beowulf does not show fear and goes out of his way to make sure his actions are not perceived as cowardly. “My lord Higlac/might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to go.” By defeating Grendel, using only his bare hands, Beowulf is embodying the personality characteristics that the Anglo-Saxon society valued in its warriors. Beowulf is a religious character. He is a good character who works for and with God to defeat evil creatures.
