THE BANNING OF RELIGIOUS SYMBOLIC Frances new secular debate. I’ll be examining the reasons in favour of banning religious symbols or limiting. How it’s oppressive to women. Lastly, it will establish the arguments in favour of it not being banned. In this case, it will base the discussion on the rights to religion, culture, and freedom. Moreover, I will discuss the arguments that I find most persuasive. “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" is the French motto which came about around the time of the French revolution (1789-1799). Liberty represents freedom. Equality can stand for being equal in law and so to maintain similar rules, status, rights, respect, opportunities and privileges that must be applied to all. Fraternity is a word associated with the idea of community. The reason of wearing a hijab varies from one country to another. In Arabic, the term hijab means a barrier. Whereas in Islamic religion, it refers to the modesty and behaviour that people believ that prophet Muhammed expects them to live by. Muslims pray in a French republic build upon the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity. But in return they are expected to totally integrate in a state with zero tolerant of multiculturalism and this is the core of the problem. There are various problems of wearing religious symbols in public; Firstly different religious symbols makes people feel left out from the society the French motto of equality would not happen, if religion was allowed to be expressed on the streets. Secondly, wearing the burqa can also lead to criminal activities. Anybody can go into a shop and still something and their identity cannot be proved as their whole body would be covered with clothing. Lastly it would go against their own carrier; they would be limited from working in a specific carrier such as Public Servant, Entertainment etc… Population of Muslims in France
