Shepard Fairey first believed that he wouldn’t be able to go very far in this career as he was white, and didn’t come from the Bronx, but one of the things that influenced him was the movie “they live”, he was so influenced by this movie because of how much it was against advertising. When Fairey began this career he started off with illegal work and occasionally he got into trouble with policeman. As soon as his artworks became viewed as artworks and he started to become more known, Shepard Fairey began to be asked for his work and eventually have gallery exhibitions, showing the work that was once illegal. The way Fairey wanted to capture his artwork and display a meaning was to make art that didn’t have much explanation, in which this made the viewer of his art
Street art, c. 2010, is a paradigm of hybridity in global visual culture, a post- postmodern genre being defined more by real-time practice than by any sense of unified theory, movement, or message. Many artists associated with the “urban art movement” don’t consider themselves “street” or “graffiti” artists, but as artists who consider the city their necessary working environment. It’s a form at once local and global, post-photographic, post-Internet, and post-medium, intentionally ephemeral but now documented almost obsessively with digital photography for the Web, constantly appropriating and remixing imagery, styles, and techniques from all possible sources. It’s a community of practice with its own learned codes, rules, hierarchies of prestige, and means of communication. Street art began as an underground, anarchic, in-your-face appropriation of public visual surfaces, and has now become a major part of visual space in many cities and a recognized art movement crossing over into the museum and gallery system.1 This chapter outlines a synthetic view of this hybrid art category that comes from my own mix of experiences and roles—as an art and media theorist in the university, as an owner of a contemporary gallery that has featured many street artists, and as a colleague of many of the artists, curators, art dealers, and art collectors who have contributed to defining street art in the past two decades.2 The street artists who have been defining the practice since the 1990s are now a major part of the larger story of contemporary art and visual culture.
The photo was scrutinised and it was claimed that Banksy’s identity had been revealed, but still to this day Banksy refuses to confirm or deny any ideas that are put forward as to who he really is. Banksy is well known for his street art, but the recent release of Banksy’s debut documentary film heralds a new addition to his already impressive portfolio of art. The film is called ‘Exit through the Gift Shop,’ and was nominated for the 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. When told, Banksy announced that he did not agree with the concept of award ceremonies. This was probably for the best, because the film didn’t win the award in the end.
There is a huge number of rapper and hip-hop singer in the middle east that are not discovered because of the culture that we live in that does not accept the fact that an Arab could be singing rap, even though this music genre was discovered in the middle east, still they don’t appreciate it. The question is why the Arabs hate this kind of music and is there is a reason for them hating this kind of genre. Everyone have his or her own taste of music. Some people like rap and hip-hop and others don’t. Rap and hip-hop are more likable to youth in the Middle East but that does not mean that the rest should respect this kind of music because the youth only represent 30 percent of the Middle East and the other 70 percent are adults and children.
An art is described as being an expression of human creativity and imagination in visual form or production of works which can be appreciated because of their beautiful outlook. Art is mainly used to convey ideas or information in a creative way through self-expression of the artist who is involved in creating it. According to Bingham and Jane (2010, p914), different forms of graffiti have been of great use in getting an insight into the lifestyles of people who lived in the past. In the same book, the author explains the different types of graffiti which include: gang, a form less artistic and usually carrying message of threat or territory; mural, large masterpieces which are artistically motivated; tagging, which are highly visible and artistic names of taggers. Recently, many governments have come up with anti-graffiti laws to help curb this art.
This surprises me because I never would’ve thought that Hip Hop is a culture, especially the fact that it started out as a peaceful youth community. While I was researching, I’ve decided to look up the various rap artists during the 80s. Now the question is, is Hip Hop music always about egoistic rappers and gang violence? Of course not. These artists wrote about various meaningful topics - unity, social issues, politics, and the search for identity.
Body A. Throughout ancient time, graffiti has been a means of communication. 1. According to the PBS production, “The History of Graffiti,” the very first people to use graffiti were the cave men. (PowerPoint) They drew pictures of animals, family members, and events that happened.
It allows us to influence others. Essentially art is a freedom of expression. Banksy is a graffiti artist who has taken the freedom of expression to a new level. Graffiti may fall into the category of art but many refuse to see it this way because most graffiti has no creativity. It appears to be just a bunch of scribbles and lines used to signify territory rather than to express thoughts and feelings.
This has valued the price of how much his art is selling at his gallery and exhibitions because of how popular his works are. Street Artists can also promote their work through the media, by putting ads and articles on the newspaper about their work. This is a vital tool, some street artists depend on to promote their work, and use newspaper advertisements or articles to inform people about gallery openings and showcases. Because of how largely the media has been able to influence the development of street art, and how easy it is to access the works of street artists, people have become so inspired and view street artists as heroes in society. Street art doesn’t have one specific time period or place where it was created; Graffiti art has been around for as long as humanity. When most people think of ‘street art’ they conjure crude images of graffiti, and its close associations with gang culture portray street art as a tool to vandalise public property and essentially mark the gang’s territory. Nowadays, graffiti art has become a respected new art form and has become a unique aesthetic with very few restrictions or rules. Graffiti derives from the Italian word ‘graffito’ which translates as ‘scratch’, during the prehistoric era, man would essentially scratch images onto caves walls. Despite man’s penchant for progress, graffiti was slow to evolve during its first several thousand years of its early existence.
