It is a major centre economically for commerce and international business but is also strong in the arts, education, entertainment, fashion, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport. London generates 20% of the UK’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is the sixth largest city economy in the world, which is impressive when comparing its size to other cities, such as the megacities of Tokyo, Bangalore and Shanghai. The Thames runs right through the city centre, near high business and economic hubs such as Canary Wharf, so this puts London’s financial centre at an even greater risk.
