Rex Tam Michael Mills English 102 03/13/2014 Historical Criticism in Fences In American history of literature, August Wilson is famous as an African American’s playwright that writes a lot about the experiences of black people at that era. August Wilson's Fences is a play with a theme centered on African Americans in the mid-twentieth century. "Fences deals with such issues as racism, deferred dreams, parental abuse and responsibilities and family relationships” (Sanders). With the use of historical criticism, this paper will discuss how Wilson showed the readers his view of African American is inequality in white society by using the characters and the setting of the story. It’s not only the barrier of the African Americans to seek their dream, it also affected and hurted African Americans’ life deeply. For instance, the treatment of Americans will usually better than African Americans in some restaurant or market. Just like what Troy said in the play, a African American who go in a restaurant can't get any kind of service. However, a white American guy come in, he not only has a waiter to service him, they also provide a bowl of stew and meet to him. On the other hand, what Troy got was only a potato with no waiter service. Clearly, this represents the unfair society at that time even I believe that the African Americans didn’t do anything that is wrong. People’s race is borned from the beginning, that is, we can’t change it. In the story, Troy didn’t even have a chance to explain his idea, his life of unjust poverty, racism, and discrimination, which prevented his chance to be a successful baseball athlete or even a successful father (“Defending Troy Maxton from Racial Discrimination in August Wilson’s Fences”). Cory, a poor boy has lived in his father's huge shadow, which the source that makes Cory need to be live under Troy’s shadow is racism too.
