Asylum Seekers: What are the facts? For decades now the issue of Asylum Seekers has been ringing through the media as more countries face the problem of immigrants seeking Refuge in their countries. The term ‘asylum seekers’ refers to all people who apply for refugee protection, whether or not they are officially determined to be refugees. Refugees, asylum seekers and the Australians who support them have had to endure countless media articles full of inaccuracies and stereotypes. But sometimes media organisations go one step further and publish information which is deliberately false. There are both benefits and disadvantages for both the seekers and the countries, a few of these are: Most asylum seekers are excluded from most benefits. If you are an asylum seeker, you are not entitled to any of the following benefits – * Income Support * Income-based Job Seekers Allowance * Housing Benefit * Council Tax Benefit * Social Fund * Disability Living Allowance * Attendance Allowance * Invalid Care Allowance * Severe Disablement Allowance * Non-contributory incapacity benefit * Working Families' Tax Credit * Disabled Person's Tax Credit * Child Benefit But if accepted they will no longer suffer from homelessness and rough conditions, Asylum Seekers can also help the economy of a certain country in many ways, but accepting too many Asylum seekers can lead to overpopulated cities. However a certain person can fake their identity and refuge and as there is no way to prove an identity of an asylum seeker, the person might be a wanted criminal or terrorist posing as an asylum seeker. After a long process the Asylum seekers are granted a permanent residency and are then entitled to the same Centrelink, schooling and health benefits as anyone else. However the media spreads many myths and false information about Asylum
