Personal Philosophy Paper Yvette Thompson NURS 502 May 27, 2013 Nursing Defined My philosophy of Nursing was created early in life. I was motivated by the uniform that my grandmother wore on a daily basis. At the age of 10 I began to inquire about the meaning of the cap and why the uniform had to be white and pressed so hard. Grandma Lillian, at that time, stated that to be a nurse you have to follow certain guidelines and have a love for taking care of all types of people. She also encouraged me to start early taking care of my dolls and to start reading easy books about medical issues. At that point, I totally envisioned being a nurse just like my grandmother. This patient had declined and her nutritional intake was very poor to say the least. I was assigned to this patient to help her with her meals and provide wound care for a pressure ulcer that was 10cm wide and 4 inches in depth. Part of the size of the wound was created by the wound center to help it heal without sepsis. After 3 months of feeding and wound care treatment consistently day to day her wound had decreased to 3cm wide and 1 inch in depth. There was a complete transformation in her debilitating diagnosis to one of goal setting for discharge. She was feeding herself and began walking on the hall with assistance. Diligence and compassion for this patient was needed at all times and her family wrote a letter of appreciation for all of us that provided care and a personal letter to me that was given to my supervisor for employee of the month. There were days when the wound had a foul odor and at times she was resistant to care but a kind word from the heart with a gentle touch was received. I was promoted after this experience and recommended for unit manager which I turned down to maintain my bedside hands on
