Gun Control Policy Gun control and firearm issues have always been at the top of the most debated topics in American culture and politics. Throughout history, gun violence and cases of mass public shootings have always focused Americans eyes on gun control. The main focal point and the cause of the continuing debate on gun control stems from the ratification of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The basis of this Amendment was for national security and the efficiency of the people of the United States to gather together and form a defensive army against foreign militants.
Jeffrey Ensor Mrs. Bramely Argumentative Essay 12/7/11 Legalize It The US war on drugs places great emphasis on arresting people for smoking marijuana. Since 1990, nearly 5.9 million Americans have been arrested on marijuana charges, a greater number than the entire populations of Alaska, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming combined. So what does that say? Marijuana users are being punished for a drug that can ultimately benefit a lot of people. Marijuana should be legalized it will not only benefit the well being of sick patients but also it will help economic needs of this country and also decline in crime will be apparent.
Gun Violence Solutions for America The recent tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary school once again brought to the forefront of public debate the role of firearms in our culture. The American culture of gun ownership is one of the most distinguishing features of this nation as the United States has almost as many firearms as people. Enshrined into our national fabric with the 2nd Amendment, the debate on guns and their restrictions is every bit as emotionally charged and hotly debated as immigration or abortion. While law-abiding citizens should continue to be allowed to own guns, a re-evaluation who is allowed to purchase them combined common-sense restrictions would go a long ways to preventing tragedies. Firearm ownership is a long American tradition, dating back to before the Revolutionary War when the forefathers of our nation needed guns on a daily basis for hunting or personal protection.
The reduction of the crime rates following the reduction of gun-related violence can be used to justify gun control. However, the official statistics does not support this assumption. The reasoning that guns cause crimes arises numerous disputations, as it does not consider that guns are just another mean of committing a crime. Pro-gun advocates usually assert, “Guns do not kill people; people kill people.” The Vice President, Wayne Lapierre argued that the best solution to the Newton Massacre was to allow citizens to own guns. He stated”The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Spitzer,
Using this logic, citizens would be denied the ability to drive cars because drunk drivers use them to kill people. Rand completely fails to mention that the right to carry concealed firearms is a fundamental attribute of decentralized US crime-fighting initiatives that have made an unambiguously positive impact on society—not only on gun violence—but also on broader crime categories that include murder, rape, and robbery. These benefits are mostly long-term, as any immediate increase in crime after the passage of concealed carry laws is “dwarfed over time by the decrease in crime associated with the post-law trend” (Moody & Marvell, 2008, p. 270). Furthermore, according to data collected by the Violence Policy Center over the last four years, murders committed by “permit-holders amount to fewer than one of every 200 murders. For every
Every weapon classification that has been developed for military use is meant to serve a unique purpose in the complex tactical strategies that various modern infantry forces use around the globe. The development of the assault rifle and earlier types of small arms was influenced by significant historical origins. These historical origins range from the ancient discovery of gunpowder, to the arrival of modern warfare in the early twentieth century. The American M-16 and Russian AK-47 possess diverse backgrounds of military philosophy based on their designs and capabilities. The mass-production of these rival firearms and their modified variants during the Cold War era reflects the aspect that the United States and the USSR had established themselves as two dominant superpowers immediately following the post-war period in 1945.
Gun Control Does gun control decrease crime, or does it change anything at all. Criminals will have guns regardless of if they’re legal. If we make guns illegal, only the criminals will have guns. Law abiding citizens will have no way of defending themselves against said criminals. No matter what kind of gun control we have, criminals will always be able to obtain guns through the black market.
It will not stop people from buying guns off of the black market and using them like they always have. The federal government regulations make it very difficult for the common man in crime driven neighborhoods to buy a gun, while the thug, under any garb, continues to procure arms illegally. While a segment of the law guarantees individuals the right to own guns, another amendment makes owning a handgun difficult and many people feel that their constitutional rights are being denied (Borade). There will always be murders and killing in our world but gun control is not the answer. If they take away guns, they might as well ban knives alcohol and other dangerous things, but would also be nearly impossible to achieve.
These gun owners maintain that an unregulated right to bear arms is guaranteed to citizens by the 2nd amendment and this position received support in a Supreme Court decision issued in 2008 which disallowed a Washington D.C. complete ban on handguns. Opponents of gun control argue that gun owners often use their weapons to deter crime and that handguns are most commonly used for this purpose. “Research also shows that many laws do not significantly diminish the number of guns used in violence, although many advocates of gun control assumed they would” (Zimring 48).Some studies have shown that such defensive use of weapons occurs at a much greater rate than the extent to which weapons are used in criminal activity although the validity of these studies is in dispute. Gun control opponents are generally law abiding citizens who put greater trust in individualism than in the government to protect their safety. They are concerned that each step toward greater gun control will lead to the eventual confiscation of all firearms.
Guns have been around for a long time throughout history guns have played a major role. Our founding fathers used guns to defend and take over America. They have placed amendments in the constitution to ensure that we will always have guns. The liberals have been calling on taking away guns and making very strict gun control laws. Gun control doesn't work look at Chicago for instance they have some of the highest crime rates but yet they have some of the strictest gun laws.
