Essay #1 Revision 2/14/11 Gun Control The recent shooting in Arizona has brought up the ongoing debate of our gun control laws. The efficacy of constitutional action, constituting federal regulation of the use of firearms has been promoted via a number of gun control laws enacted since the beginning of the 20th century. The comprehensive understanding of the pros and cons of gun control is in constant debate (Borade). Unfortunately, enforcing laws that do not allow us to own our own guns will not stop a crazy person from killing another person. Citizens should be able to carry and own guns for their own personal protection because we all know that prohibition will not stop anyone from obtaining one regardless. It will not stop people from buying guns off of the black market and using them like they always have. The federal government regulations make it very difficult for the common man in crime driven neighborhoods to buy a gun, while the thug, under any garb, continues to procure arms illegally. While a segment of the law guarantees individuals the right to own guns, another amendment makes owning a handgun difficult and many people feel that their constitutional rights are being denied (Borade). There will always be murders and killing in our world but gun control is not the answer. If they take away guns, they might as well ban knives alcohol and other dangerous things, but would also be nearly impossible to achieve. If someone intends on killing another, they are going to go forward with it whether they have a gun or not. On the other hand he states that "In a study of 23 high-income countries, the U.S. had 80% of the gun deaths, along with a gun homicide rate nearly 20 times higher than the rest of the sample'' clearly shows gun control is a necessary debate, although the outcome is without fail unbalanced (Grunwald). Prohibition will not stop crimes and murders, as it will not stop criminals from obtaining them from various sources. It cannot be denied that if more people are allowed to own and carry guns, deaths and injuries from the weapons will also subsequently increase but, everyone should be able to protect themselves from criminals and should not be told not to own a gun because crimes will always exist and we will always need protection.
