Utopia “The American Dream…will remain only our dream and never be our destiny” (Williamson1). This proves true in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men in which the characters George, Lennie, Candy, and Crooks find retreat from their harsh life by the dream that one day they will buy a few acres of land on which they will grow their own food and have their own livestock. This idea completely entices the characters because the possibility of a free, tranquil life brings hope for the future, a light at the end of the long and dark tunnel. Throughout the novel Crooks, George, Lennie, and Candy imagine the farm as a place of freedom and security; however, their dream of utopia proves to be impossible to reach and through these characters, Steinbeck suggests that it is also impossible to reach in reality.
I thought I should have stepped to help out but pigs were given first priority to and had more power than anyone in the farm, thus I decided not to. As days passed, Napoleon and Snowball took over, and started to run the farm. Napoleon was quite different from the whole group of animals, personally I did not like him or trust ‘Animal Farm’ in his hands. Napoleon’s speeches were short and to the point, which many of us including me, who never followed what he said. Us, animals were blindfolded by him and never realized he took advantage of the lack of knowledge we had just for the his benefit now and later in the future as well.

Later in the story the pigs started drinking alcohol and then they changed the commandment to “no animal may drink alcohol to excess”. Another verbal irony was “all animals are created equal” soon it changes to “all animals are created equal, but some are more equal then others”. Crooks dreams of being seen as equal to everyone else. He remembers fondly his childhood, when he played with white children who came to his family's chicken ranch, and longs for a similar relationship with white people again. Excluded from the companionship that exists in the bunkhouse – no cards or chat. His possessions include books as he reads instead of having company, and he has no choice but to endure this prejudice and isolation. Consequently, he bitterly guards his enforced privacy, saying to Lennie, “This here’s my room…I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room.” He is regretting the way that he taunted Lennie, “A guy needs somebody – to be near him” and “a guy gets too lonely” and “A guy sets alone out here at night.” It is implied that Crooks is thrilled when Lennie and Candy come into his room and are his companions for a night.
It is only the ownership of the farm that has changed hands, the situation remains the same for the other animals, if not worse. This demonstrates how the circle continues and also puts emphasis on George’s use of allegory. As the book progresses, the animals (pigs) become from being nothing like humans to being more and more like humans till there is absolutely no difference between them at all. In this section of the book, Old Major has a dream which he presents to the other animals in the farm. For example in the novel, they escaped from Weed before heading to Soledad; the reason was because Lennie had done something there. Another impression Steinbeck has left us is that George depends on Lennie for comfort and to keep him company to avoid him being alone; due to events that was occurring around those times being lonely was not an option therefore, he took Lennie in and made him his companion. Reading on in the novel, they both looked up to the ‘American dream’ which was to work hard and buy their own land and grow crops and lots of animals. Irving states “Rip was ready to attend anybody’s business but his own; but as to doing family duty, and keeping his farm in order, he found it impossible” (406). Rip was laid back and not worried about his farm, because he thought “it was the most pestilent little piece of ground in the whole country; everything about it went wrong” (406). Rip is said to be “one of those happy mortals, of foolish, well-oiled dispositions, who take the world easy” (406). Rip did not want to work, and Irving makes that clear when he says that Rip “would have whistled life away in perfect contentment” and that he “would rather starve on a penny than work for a pound”
The night of the fight came and the tiger and the leopard were very hungry because they hadn't gone out and done any hunting at all; they wanted to get the fight over as soon as possible and eat some of the freshly killed wild boars which all the animals would bring to the fight. But when the hour of the combat came none of the animals at all showed up. "The way I look at it," a fox had told them, "is this: if the leopard can't help winning and the tiger can't lose, it will be a draw and a draw is a very dull thing to watch, particularly when fought by fighters
The barn is a symbol because this was the place the pigs painted the seven commandments and then added their revisions, which represents the collective memory of a modern nation. The pigs did this to create Animalism and to ensure that the pigs would continue to rule over all of the animals. The working-class animals would puzzle over the changes but accept them. If the working-class believes history of lies from their oppressors, the will be less likely to question oppressive practices. The windmill is a symbol of the pigs’ manipulation of the other animals for their own gain.
