Alvarez’s family came from Dominican Republic to America for a better life. Being a woman Alvarez’s struggled with America’s version of a woman. Alvarez and her three sisters would watch the Miss America Pageant’s each year admiring the young ladies. As a family they would watch the shows in their parent’s room.

Ironically; she ultimately finds love and acceptance with Aziza who like her is a “harami” and has been conceived out of wed lock.
“They always played a big role in my life, and encouraged me to be a more open person… a more outspoken person.” Nai believes that this encouragement made her stronger in comparison to her initially shy and soft spoken personality. Now, Nai stands up for what she believes in and speaks out. At the age of 23 and out of foster care for five years, today Nai is studying to become a pharmacist at Stanislaus State University. Sally’s relationship with her computer is how she expresses herself since she is a shy person. She does not want people to think that she is crazy and has lost her mind when she speaks loudly to her mom. This relationship with electronics is her way of feeling that her mom is still around. Some people can’t express their feelings out loud but can by keeping so sort of journal and this is Sally’s way of communicating. I believe the nature of this relationship between Sally and her computer is a negative relationship.
Mandy Brown What are the four types of essay organization discussed in the course readings? What characteristics make these essays expository? In reading "How to Succeed as an Online Student" and "A Soul as Free as the Air: About Lucy Stone" I found that these essays are providing much defined evidence to back up what is being said. Such as in "How to Succeed as an Online Student" they have different topics which narrows down to what the essay will be about and also providing information on those topics which all sums up to the main point and again go back to the title of the essay "How to succeed as an Online Student". Also are supporting the position, and at the same time are making the points very easy to distinguish the difference in each.
She had an excellent elementary school counselor and always remembered her as being the nicest person on campus. After that expereince she aspired to do the same. She has been a school counselor now for 4 years, all in the middle school setting. Ms. Childs explained that her district focus’ more on developmental guidance for all levels.
