Analysis of "Roach"

The main character, Eric Denis also referred as Eric “Roach” Denis is the filmmaker of the documentary S.P.I.T. Roach experienced an obstacle of events throughout his life. He experienced a dangerous life as a homeless drug user, to a transformation as an activist and documentary filmmaker. Roach began his life on the streets after things began to get bad at home. After his drug user parents got divorced, his mother left his father to care for him. That’s when the abuse and the absence of his childhood began. He was then forced to leave his home to live on the streets. He blamed his problems and absence of knowledge on his father who “took away his childhood”. Roach lacked parental support from his father throughout his adolescent years. The scene that best emphasised the abuse that Roach endured as a child was told during his birthday party with his friends. During the scene he was constantly complaining of how his father would never allow him to have a birthday party and how he was never allowed to experience what it felt like to be a child. It is believe part of his problems were caused and formed from the lack of support of his parents. However, after Roach left his father’s house, he could have immediately searched for help and looked at turning his life around. Which makes me believe that it was his responsibility and decision for not immediately changing his lifestyle. “Changing his lifestyle” by primarily taking small steps, such as searching for a job. Roach is perceived as a person who does not like to be given rules. Which leads me to think, that he preferred believing he had more as a homeless punk, then if he were to have a job. Which would force him to take orders from authority, which he did not like. Most squeegees have the choice to change their life around if they would begin and accept a new stage in their life, such as seeking
