Political views aside, most can agree that Barack Obama is an influential and very effective speaker. He is able to inspire masses of people with his simple, yet articulate use of words. He always speaks with a sense of smooth confidence, yet never near the spectrum of arrogance. Obama is truly talented in his ability to make people identify with him, because the audience feels as if he walked a mile in their shoes.

Using “we are” and “fellow citizens” showed that he actually does care about this country and makes everyone equal. He also talks as if he as well as all the American citizens is in making this country better together. Using “hopeful” makes his tone more reliable and makes him sound more confident. You have to consider what your rhetorical situation is before you start. Bullock and Goggins had some great strategies to go by when it comes to writing. They believed that, “We have a purpose, a certain audience, a particular stance, a genre, and a medium to consider- and often as not a design” (Bullock, Goggin 1).
