How does Priestley present ideas about how we should treat other people in An Inspector Calls? J.B. Priestley is a socialist, he believes that capitalism creates inequality in the society and often the voice of the working class people is not heard. He supports the views that a society should be equal; eliminating the anarchy and everyone should be able to realize their own potential. In An Inspector Calls one of Priestley’s ideas is to show how the poor people were treated as “cheap labor” and didn’t have any rights demand a better attitude towards them because they don’t own a business and their place in the society is at the bottom because they can’t afford to invest in an industrial city like theirs. Sheila had a great impact on Eva Smith’s jobs after she sacked her from it; she had that power because she comes from wealthy family that is spending their money in that shop. However, the Inspector tries to get the others to accept everyone shares a common humanity and they are part of an interdependent community. Sheila and Eric understand his message and they feel responsible for their actions but older generation who doesn’t agree with socialists is represented by Mr. and Mrs. Birling cannot see why is it wrong to treat people like they are not good enough because they don’t have as much as money as you. Inspector’s oratorical style is used to become a spokesperson for those poor people. He does not agree with capitalism and tries to make people understand that all people need to have equal rights. He is showing how disguised he is by how a girl has been driven to suicide because she was rejected by the society with capitalist views, and the audience can feel that, in a way, capitalism killed her.
