Austin Cole Mr. Elliott 14 November 2012 The American Dream: what is the American Dream? Is it still alive or is it dead and long gone? This is a question that many people don’t know the answer to. So I am going to explain how the American Dream is still alive and well. First, what is the American Dream? If we truly don’t understand what it is, then we don’t really know whether it is alive or dead. (Dictionary.com) defines the American Dream as the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American. What does that really mean? I think that definition means having freedom whether it is freedom of speech or freedom to do anything you would like and also having the opportunity to go places and have careers that you have dreamed about your whole life. A young Mexican man came to the United States legally to find a better life for himself. He had already started a family in Mexico, but he didn’t have enough money to support them. He could not make enough money to bring his whole family with him, so he just came by himself and ended up in Bowling Green, Ky. He works for a tree trimming company and makes a honest living. (Jose) says that he makes about 400 dollars a week, and he spends $200 a week to live off and saves the rest. He sends the rest of the money to his wife and two kids that are still in Mexico. He said that in about 2 more years he will be able to save enough money to bring his whole family over. He has been gone for 2 years and has not seen his family since he arrive here.
