“All Directors have their own unique style”. Tim Burton is a great director and like most great directors, Burton has his own unique style. His style is unusual, strange, and gothic. Tim Burton like’s to explore the living and the dead in a lot of his moves and he also likes to explore reality vs madness in his film through different personalities, gothic themes, colour and symbolism. Colour is used very well in Tim Burton’s films for example in sleepy hollow (1999) it is a very dark film, not just in terms of themes but also in the images and shots themselves. For example when Ichabod Crane first walks down the streets of sleepy hollow the houses are very dark shades of grey and anything that is meant to be white is covered in dirt and filth. The only place that is white is the church at the end of the street which is meant to be a place of hope and forgiveness. In most of Burtons films the darkness and contrast is also contributed through the looks of the chapters and clothes that they wear. For example in Alice in Wonderland (2010) there is the red queen who dresses in red and black to represent she is bad and evil, then there is the white queen who is dressed in white to represent she is good and fare to her people. Burton’s colours, clothes, images and shots are just a few of the things that make Tim Burton’s style unique. There are so many different personalities in Tim Burton’s films and some of the personalities are shown by the way they look. For example in Corpse Bride (2005) Victoria has a small head which implies that shy is very shy and Victoria’s mother has a big long head emphasising she is very bossy and everything has to go her way.
