Aida: The greatest Opera of its time Aida is an great example of a grand opera at its finest. The story is exciting the music is great and you wont be able to forget it after you see it. The opera Aida has been called as a timeless love story. Set 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, written in Italy around 1870, and performed today all over the world. Auguste Mariette wrote the original script that Verdi would later put to music. The making of Aida by Verdi started when Isma'il Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, paid Verdi to write the opera for performance in January 1871. But, because of the Franco-Prussian War, the performance was delayed until that December because, Auguste Mariette, who was hired as the opera’s production designer, became stuck in Paris with all of the costumes and scenery. Verdi didn’t conduct the first performance of Aida; he had a fear of going on a boat over the water so he was content with staying home. Therefore, he considered the Italian premiere on February 8, 1872 to be Aida’s real premiere. Isma'il Pasha wanted the opera because he had been obsessed with the idea of Verdi writing him something to be performed at his brand new opera house in Cairo. He at first wanted Verdi to write him a piece to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal but Verdi told Isma'il that he didn’t write occasional pieces. Isma'il then sent Verdi the plotline and scenery ideas written up by Mariette and Verdi thought it was a great idea. He loved how big it would be, both the sets and cast, and complemented the dramatic turns of the story saying it was perfect for an opera. The general plot of the Aida opera is actually quite simple. Aida, an Ethiopian slave is secretly a princess and desperately in a relationship with Rhadames, an Egyptian general.
