Money and power in the play go hand in hand-he who has power has more money, and he who has more money possesses more power. Torvald’s power comes from his money; it is how he manages to contain such control over a number of people, such as his wife in the beginning of the play. 2. Which is more valuable to Krogstad: money or reputation? Reputation is more valuable to Krogstad because instead of technically worrying about how much money he would make, Krogstad is more concerned with clearing his name of his crime of forgery, so as his children would not have to grow up with such a bad reputation because of him. 3. Why do you think Torvald is so horrified of debt? Torvald is so terrified of debt because he feels that there can be “No freedom or beauty about a home that life that depends on borrowing and debt.” Also, it is this initial fear that causes Nora to secretly take out a loan from Krogstad, as Helmer would not think twice of taking out a loan, possibly because of his job at the bank, he knows of some of the major cons to borrowing money and then being left to drown in a sea of debt. 4. Financial hardship has made Christine a stronger person because it has forced her to initially put on the man’s pants and portray the role of breadwinner, so as to provide for her ailing mother.
