This arrogance shown by Birling portrays the upper class in a bad way and creates the dislike for Mr Birling. In the play priestly makes the audience perceive birling as foolish and arrogant, this portrays the upper class as bad and the audience of 1946 start to see that maybe the upper class isn’t so great and that they might be wrong “the Germans don’t want war” and “absolutely unsinkable” these show how wrong birling’s views and ideas were and how the upper class are wrong. This use of showing Birling as arrogant makes the audience side with the audience. Birling denies major future events and priestly uses dramatic irony to show the arrogance of Birling and the denial he is in. this arrogance by Birling is shown through his lack of care for his family and his priories are climbing the social ladder and stopping a public scandal.
Mr Birling is shown to be an arrogant and confident character. With his first line in the extract given he shows a very careless and selfish attitude with the statement 'I discharged her'. Birling gives a cold attitude towards Eva Smith's life and shows that he doesn't care for her, giving himself a more noticeable selfish attitude. Birling decides to not use her name and constantly regards her as 'girl' and the fact he has to think about her time at his business shows that she wasn't important enough to him, and shows that he thinks workers and people below him don't deserve to be called by their names. Birling tries to intimidate Inspector Goole by boasting about his status and the type of people he knows, for example when Birling mentions the engagement between Sheila and Gerald Croft - a name made famous by 'Croft's limited', Birling brings this up to intimate the Inspector as Birling expects his status to buy him away from trouble and put him above the law.
Mr Birling appears not to know the difference. The Inspector, through what he says tries to show the Birling’s how dangerous, selfish and immoral their social lifestyles are. The Inspector repeatedly undermines Mr Birling although he is of higher status “there are a lot of young women…if there weren’t the factories and warehouses wouldn’t know where to look for cheap labour” This shows that the Inspector knows how business works and how the workers are exploited by Mr Birling, by calling them cheap it suggests they have no value. The Inspector also tries to teach Mr Birling what he is doing is wrong “it’s better to ask for the earth than to take it” this is a lesson to Mr Birling that at least Eva Smith asked for a rise. Mr Birling takes all of his money without asking anyone.
The individuals were not able to defend themselves, this is an abuse of power and trust. Winterbourne were putting profits before humanity, it was run with a view to profit and with a lack of interest to its residents or staff. Poor working practices are seen here, one member of staff stated that he was originally shocked by the ill treatment of patients at Winterbourne yet became use to it over time. This is unsafe practice, not reporting incidents is also abusing the residents as they are still in danger. It was this member of staff’s responsibility to report what was happening.
However, Gatsby fails to reach his goal because all social classes are not equal. Those with "new money" are disliked by those with "old money" (like Daisy), and the idea that he was poor disgusts her. This shows the failure of the American Dream. Whilst Gatsby struggles to hide his past, Tom Buchanan has control of the past. When Gatsby attempts to regain the past by persuading Daisy to tell Tom she doesn't love him, Tom destroys Gatsby's dream.
Essay body paragraph Through Sophy’s relationship with Sam and Randolph the reader experiences Sophy’s pain and her freedom. Randolph is the one of the main causes of pain as he “would not [let Sophy] wed Samuel Hobson without his consent”. This is ironic because the child is telling the adult what to do when it should really be the other way around. Randolph is only forbidding Sophy because he thinks “it will degrade [him] in the eyes of all the gentlemen of England” if Sophy was to marry Sam. This is because Sam is in a lower class than Randolph, this will give Randolph a lower reputation than what he wants, this highlights that his concept of a gentleman is only based on class and wealth and not being considerate of others.
