911 Operator (Dispatcher) Being a 911 dispatcher is one of the most stressful jobs in the workforce. Mainly becuase another person's life is in your hands. All the weight is on your sholders to get authorites to come to the aid and rescue of the innocent. They act as the barrier between the innocent and help from the authorites. There duty is to adminster help ( emergency services ) to those who need it ( must call emergency services ) . To become a 911 Operator you must have Four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent. One year full time paid experience performing clerical duties; or public contact work requiring obtaining information; or 30 college credits or two years active military duty with honorable discharge. There are a series of test to become a 911 operator. One being the Civil Service Test, you must take and pass this exam to become eligable for a 911 operator job. You must be a citzen of the United States , and must have proof of it. You must go through and pass a Drug Screening. You must be medically , and Psychologically fit for this job, which will be examined. You must go through a series of investigations , one including fingerprint screening. You must understand and be understood in English. Must live in city of where you work within 90 days of appointment. When you get the job , your Starting Salary is : $33,162 and can increase to $44,899. The average pay an hour is $17.45 . The average work day for a 911 Dispatcher is a 10-hour shift working 4 days a week and 3 days off. 911 Dispatchers must work atleast 30 years untill the get there pension. There is something called vesting retirment benifit. Vesting means that you have earned the right to receive benefits in the future. If you leave City service with at least 10 years of Allowable Service (at least two years of which are Membership Service), but less than 25
