After which the barely noticed island became the centre of the world’s news channels, it became one of the most noticed natural disasters in history with celebrities and normal people alike doing allsorts to raise money and aid for the victims of the quake. Soon there was over £12million for the victims. It is thought that over 150,000 people were killed but the exact number is unknown, there were also thought to be over 250,000 casualties. There are any factors that influenced the amount of deaths and injuries. In this essay I will cover many of the factors and conclude which one I feel had the biggest impact.
This type of devastation happened on March 11 2011 in Japan when a very powerful tsunami ruined the land, and on October 17 1989 when California was hit by huge earthquake named Loma Prieta. This essay will compare and contrast these two world shaking events and give some research about the two events as well. Maybe you will learn about some interesting facts about the two. A earthquake is described as a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, resulting from the movement within the earth’s crust or from volcanic action. It sometimes causes great destruction.
Compare and contrast the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake with the 1811 New Madrid Earthquake. Include these elements: type of faulting and offset, epicenter, magnitude, damage, duration, date, and area affected. California’s earthquake on April 18, 1906 which lasted around 45-60 seconds, is thought to be one of the most momentous earthquakes in history. The degree in which earthquakes are monitored and studied is due to the sheer size of its horizontal displacement and rupture length. As a result of this earthquake theories such as, elastic-rebound has been one of the models used to portray the earthquake cycle.
The Haitian government estimates that 230,000 people died, about 300,000 were injured and 1 million were made homeless out of a population of 10 million. 250,000 buildings were destroyed or badly damaged. For any country, this would have been a major disaster. However, as a very poor nation, Haiti didn’t have the resources of money to help themselves, therefore, the relied heavily on international aid. On Tuesday 17 January 1995 at 5:46, the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake hit Kobe, Japan, and it was not only powerful (7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale), but with the epicentre only 20 km southwest
2) In your opinion what were the main factors that caused such a massive amount of death and destruction in the Haiti Earthquake? The main factors contributing to the massive amount of death and destruction included the location and size of the initial earthquake, the nation’s vulnerability to such disasters due to the amount of poverty within Port au Prince and the lack of preparation for such a disaster. The initial earthquake occurred at 4:43pm local time with a focus situated approximately 25km to the west of the capital Port au Prince at a depth of 13km. Due to the closeness to the surface of the focus, the shockwaves of the earthquake were much more powerful when they reached the surface, when compared to an earthquake that occurred 10km deeper into the earth crust. According to Pete Garrat, the Red Cross head of disaster relief, the most lethal combination of all of the factors contributing to the huge death toll, was location of the epicentre and the density of the population in heavily urbanised and poverty stricken areas nearby.
Could the Boscastle flood have been predicted and would a prediction have reduced the impact? Boscastle is a quiet village and fishing port on the north cost of Cornwall with beautiful scenery built at the confluence of the valency and Jordan Rivers. At 12:15 it was a dry day in Boscastle with dark clouds visible in Camelford. 15 minutes later at 12:30, heavy rain began to fall. The effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans was extremely severe, resulting from one of the most deadly natural disasters in U.S. history. By August 30th, 2005, one day after the Category 4 storm made landfall, about 80 percent of the city of New Orleans, was flooded with some parts of the city under 20 feet of water. The flood was caused by several levees breaches, which most people didn’t believe it could breach, due to a combination of a powerful storm surge, strong winds and excess water in the bodies of water surrounding the city. After reading the author’s response, her curiosity was based on her belief that the delayed response time was due to racism. She first noticed when watching the T.V.

In 2010 a massive earthquake hit the Haiti killing thousands. The elections that followed did not have a large turn out and the election went to Michel Martelly. According to Time World (2012) Dominican Senator Félix Bautista, who owns or controls construction companies that in the past year have received Haitian government contracts worth more than $200 million and paid Martelly a total of almost $2.6 million during Martelly's presidential campaign and after his landslide victory in Haiti's 2011
