I must continually improve my knowledge so I have the skills to pass on to our social care workers and other staff members. I need to know what I am aiming for and what I need to do to meet my objectives. I need to be a positive role model to all staff members. Working in the Health and Social Care industry I think the most important thing is the service users and our health and social care workers and their happiness.

A: Occupational Therapy is a profession concerned with promoting health and wellbeing through occupation. ■ The most important goal of occupational therapy is to enable disable people to participate in the daily life activities. Coaching and mentoring are centred on unlocking a person ´s potential to maximise his or her own performance. A focus on improving performance and the development of skills is the key to an effective coaching relationship. To achieve this, Coaching and mentoring should be applied to the area you want to develop, such as motivating staff, delegating, problem solving, relationship issues, team building, and staff development.
These influence work in the health and social care sector in many ways. The promotion of these values to the service user makes the service user more valued in the correlation of their care plan and every day decision making. Reflective practice is a term used to describe a technique for analysing and addressing developmental needs which we may have. It is a process by which we look back on how we work or have worked, identifying weaknesses and areas for improvement. Reflective practice also enables us to identify strengths which we can maintain. Reflecting on our practice therefore helps us to improve and develop ourselves. Reflective practice can take place: verbally – discussing our progress and practice with managers, supervisors, tutors or colleagues in writing – such as writing an account or diary of daily activities, developments or incidents, and identifying ways in which we could use these experiences to improve.

Most often, Occupational therapists using sensory based services geared towards adults will use the Ayres Sensory Integration Approach. Other approaches, which are rendered on an individual basis are, Remedial intervention, Accommodations and Adaptations, Sensory Diet Programs, Environmental Modifications and Education. The focus and goal of these approaches is to support the persons need to “fully participate in meaningful life roles, routines, and important daily activities”. Given the right modifications, tools, such as ear plugs or sensory kits, the client can independently manage and increase effectiveness in their daily life. It is the responsibility of the OT to make sure the treatment is meaningful and appropriate to the client.
Also feedback given can be used to evaluate own performance and inform development, this can include; using the feedback to raise awareness of strengths; can identify any areas for improvement; knowing what actions can be taken to improve performance; actively seeking feedback; having sources of feedback, for example, supervisors, mentors, colleagues; effective feedback develops confidence, competence and motivation. National Occupational Standards (NOS) describe best practice by bringing together skills, knowledge and values. National Occupational Standards are valuable tools to be used as benchmarks for qualifications as well as for defining roles at work, staff recruitment, supervision and appraisal.
