2/7/2012 Adult Scope of Practice Assignment OCT 1000 While there is an array of fields the Occupational therapist specializes in, I found Sensory Processing Problems in adults to be an area of expertise that I was least informed about. Most often, Occupational therapists using sensory based services geared towards adults will use the Ayres Sensory Integration Approach. Other approaches, which are rendered on an individual basis are, Remedial intervention, Accommodations and Adaptations, Sensory Diet Programs, Environmental Modifications and Education. The focus and goal of these approaches is to support the persons need to “fully participate in meaningful life roles, routines, and important daily activities”. Given the right modifications, tools, such as ear plugs or sensory kits, the client can independently manage and increase effectiveness in their daily life. It is the responsibility of the OT to make sure the treatment is meaningful and appropriate to the client. Before researching this topic I had associated Sensory Processing Problems with children. In my ignorance I had assumed Sensory Processing Problems was a childhood condition that, to some degree, would be outgrown. I had not considered the impact the condition has had on the adult population. Especially, when many have gone most of their lives undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. This disorder is a disruption of daily life for adults trying to function as parents and meaningful members of society. While symptoms seem extensive they also seem manageable given the right treatment. Works Cited "Occupational Therapy Using a Sensory Integration–Based Approach With Adult Populations." Www.aota.org.
