Final Project Future of Policing Paper The future of policing is definitely go to be very different than what it is now especially fifteen to twenty years from now, and all of this has to do with all of the new trends that are becoming available. First of all it is very important to know about these trends and also to examine them because times are changing and sometimes the change is not the best change. As the economy continues to be on the down side like it has been for the past several years it causes crime to rise. When the economy is bad people are forced to take drastic measures and do what they have to do in order to survive and to provide for their families. People find themselves in more need; so there is more theft and also more assaults. Schafer once said “The purpose of futures studies is not to know the future but to make better decisions today.” By this I take it that he is saying that if we study and prepare ourselves that when the issues arise we will be able to make the correct decisions. When it comes down to policing there are always going to be problems and issues, and officers always have to be ready for anything. The main thing that officers have to keep in mind is that they will learn by risk and error, for example the weather. We see the weather channel and we dress and prepare accordingly for the weather, like if it is raining we will need an umbrella; but when it comes to policing there is no way of preparing for the day or any unforeseeable problems. Error is something that every police officer has to learn from when it comes to being in a very hectic and unpredictable field. I believe there are many problems that law enforcement is going to have to deal with, for example drugs, corruption and personal health issues. When it comes to drugs I believe that this issue is only going to get much worse because everyday people are coming up with new and crazy stuff. Just last month we heard of a new drug called “bath salts” and a couple of days later we here of a person eating the face of another person because they were high on this new drug, the person doing the eating was shot to death by officers because there was no controlling him. Drugs are very dangerous but so it is understandable
