The character Peter Keating embodies altruism and only feels he shouldn’t exist for his own sake but the services that he receives from others reason for existing is for fame and approval for others. Peter Keating lives off of his good looks, success and people around him. To have resources to only justify his own existence, self- sacrifice is only his highest right of responsibility, benefit, and importance. Peter will do whatever it takes to succeed in this world even if it means stealing, lying, or Killing. "He had forgotten his first building, and the fear and doubt of its birth.
I warn’t lonesome now” (pg 49) This quote is important because it is a key detail that indicates the feelings of Huck when he sees Jim at the beginning of his trip. It reveals to us that Jim fills a void in Huck’s life by providing him with companionship in their adventures. In conclusion Twain examines the theme of friendship to show us that friendship makes Huck’s decision of whether to help Jim escape slavery so difficult. And that Huck makes several comments throughout the book that let us know how seriously he takes his friendships. Furthermore, throughout the novel one discovers another theme that is presented in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it introduces the theme
The acting was a little lacking, but the story was magnificent and shined light on an issue that needs to be fixed. In addition, I like that Mr. Xu’s boss and comrade was so dedicated to proving him to be a good father that even after he saw compelling evidence towards the abuse theory, he pursued his morals and tried to find out about Gua Sha. I’m glad we got to see this, because as English-Mandarin speakers we’re somewhat of a buffer between the quarrels of cultures and who knows: maybe in the future we’ll dissolve some sort of conflict similar to
Melchizedek gives Santiago two stones, one black and one white. He tells the boy to use this gift to read the omens by asking them a “yes or no” question. If he picks the black stone, Urim, the answer is yes and if he picks the white stone, Thummim, the answer is no. This gift symbolizes the boy’s resistance to follow what other things tell him to do. He wants to be his own person but at the same time he wants to follow his dreams.
2. The boy has to learn to respond to these omens so he can take them and follow his personal legend to the conclusion. Leaving Fatima 1. “you must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his personal legend. If he abandons that pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t true love…the love that speaks the language of the world.” 2.
Santiago found the idea of an Englishman very similar to Melchizedek. They both speak of the Soul of the World where we are all connected and the need to follow the true desires of our hearts or our Personal Legend. Santiago prefers to learn this secret by observing the world, while English people prefer to learn from complex books. As they traveled, they began hearing rumors of an upcoming tribal
He could have just given up on his writing career but he kept plugging away and was noticed by Walter Jekyll, an English buff who became McKay’s mentor and pushed him in the right direction (Giles). Through the love of the game, desire, dedication and just pure stubbornness to take no for an answer when the odds were against me, I was able to work my way on and redshirt with the team. The mentality of win or die trying is engraved in these men’s minds that are portrayed in “If we must die.” This same mentality saved me from being cut from the team. Being a non-recruit and from out of the area my chances were slim and each day was a new battle and proposed new challenges and new lessons learned. I quickly learned it was a battle field out there, each man fighting for himself to make a name and fighting to make the team better.
The Alchemist is a unique book about finding ones place in life. This book is a story of a boys’ journeys and struggles in life, it describes how he over comes his struggles in order to find his treasure. “Life Ain’t Always Beautiful” has a common theme as The Alchemist. This song tells one that even though life has struggles you can overcome them. All in all The Alchemist and “Life Ain’t Always Beautiful” have similar themes in which one sees the hardships in life, but finds the strength to overcome them.
However, by the end of this exploration that made him see the greatness of the world, Santiago discovers that the “treasure lies where your heart belongs”, and that what he was trying to find, what he was trying to search for, and unknowingly what he needed to see, was not a specific destination, but the journey itself. The people he met, the discoveries he made, and the sense of wisdom he was able to acquire along the way are the treasures themselves that he was looking for. Just like the other books written by Paulo Coelho, it is safe to say that this novel is full of symbols and imagery. His characters, objects, and even the settings of his stories are representations of things that he wants us to give importance to. As a reader, I believe that this technique that he uses helps us understand the story even more, and have a tighter grip of what the story is trying to convey.
As a character he is relatable and easy for the reader to care for. The Crystal Merchant- The Crystal Merchant helps Santiago realize he must continue with his dream to find his treasure. This is why the Crystal Merchant is such a crucial character. Being an older man he is accustom to his routine and does not welcome change. He shows his fear by expressing he does not want to go to Mecca and achieve his life dream He demonstrates this by refusing the alterations to his store which Santiago suggested.
