Salvatore Giunta similar to an epic hero. The qualities of ancient Greek heroes do align with modern day heroes. Both modern day heroes and epic heroes are able to be brave when they need to be. Odysseus, an epic hero, was a brave warrior who risked his life for his men when they needed him. Sgt.
Odysseus: A True Heroic Figure “But I would not give way.” This simple, yet strong, inspiring quote was stated on page 218 of book 9 of the Odyssey by the heroic figure Odysseus, when his crew members were ready to take everything they could escape with and avoid confrontation with the menacing Cyclops. Even though this six letter quote is short and to the point, it shows how determined Odysseus really is. I believe that Odysseus is a strong heroic figure in Greek mythology. His best qualities that reflect his heroic character are his cleverness, caring heart for his crew members, and his strong determination. Although this crafty hero has many other great qualities, these qualities are the highlights of his character.
Heroism Paralleled A hero is someone who possesses traits such as courage, perseverance, and selflessness. However, an epic hero is also comprised of characteristics that allow him to achieve a great task, with the risk of losing his own life. He depends on faith and confidence that he is the one who can bring hope to the hopeless. In the narrative Beowulf and the movie Star Wars, many aspects of heroism are paralleled. Beowulf is defined as a hero by his bravery to set out and defeat a monster that has been invincible to Hrothgar’s men.
Perfect Candidate Through an extravagant journey with unforgettable tragic action, Homer’s The Odyssey could be nominated for one of the grandest adventures ever told. And how could this legendary adventure even be considered worthy of this lofty description if the protagonist, Odysseus, had not been the ultimate and definitive epic hero. The debatable concept here is whether this admirable man could be considered for such a title. Defined by so many prestigious attributes, courage, loyalty, and nobility, as well as integrity and perseverance, he is the cream of the crop. The mighty Odysseus, possessing all of these traits, proves he is worthy of being called an epic hero throughout his wondrous journey on the way back to Ithaca.
In Beowulf, an epic poem, Beowulf is the superior character who depicts the true meaning of loyalty. Beowulf feels in a sense he owes Hrothgar, King of the Danes, a favor because the great king had assisted Beowulf's father years back. Although Beowulf is the epic hero of the poem, he is not the only character that demonstrates the characteristic of loyalty. Wiglaf is a Geat warrior who exhibits bravery and courage while helping Beowulf fight and slay the dragon. Even though the epic poem had a devastating ending, it would not have been the same without the characters displaying their loyal sides.
Beowulf originated in the Anglo Saxon era, is three thousand one hundred and eighty-two lines long, and is the most important of Old English Heroic Poems. An archetype is a very typical example of a certain person or thing. Beowulf has traits of archetypical heros and warriors. He has inhumane skills and strengths and has God sent supernatural abilities in order to complete his heroic tasks. Characteristics of the Anglo-Saxons are endless in the story of Beowulf that interest the mind but so few that change lives when internalized.
Odysseus and his brave and courageous qualities can all sum up a theme that is occurring in Homers version of The Odyssey which is heroism. To do so Odysseus has to outwit, outlast and outplay poseidon’s obstacles and go through hell and back in order to be reunited with the world he has built with his bare hands thus depicting incredible heroism throughout his
Odysseus had many chances where he could have been given great glory but would just let other’s have the glory. Odysseus solved many problems while on his epic quest in the Odyssey where he had to use his knowledge and wisdom to save his shipmates. Although these small little adventures were not helping Greece to much Odysseus was able to stop others from getting hurt if they ever have to meet these terrible creatures and scenarios which helps Greek’s even a little. This just shows how when he isn’t even trying to stamp himself in history he does it
Odysseus shows how intelligent he is, by outsmarting monsters, and tricking people. In general Odysseus is a hero because he displays epic hero qualities (traits) throughout Homer’s epic, the Odyssey. Odysseus shows a great deal of bravery throughout Homer’s epic. Odysseus is courageous when facing Polyphemous. Odysseus and his men blind Polyphem-ous, to get out of his cave that he has captured him and his men in.
Although Gilgamesh is part God, both he and Odysseus are both only mortals. One recurring theme that I see in both books is love and how strong of a motivator it can be. In the case of Gilgamesh, the love he has for his friend, Enkidu, changes him. When he starts his friendship with Enkidu, it makes him a better person. It changes him from a tormenter and a dictator to a wonderful king and a hero.
