Odysseus: Noble or Not An epic hero shows bravery strength and leadership. We follow Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey as he tells his story of great hardships, temptations, and love. He embodies the traits that his society values. In addition, he is also clever, and resourceful. Odysseus shows how intelligent he is, by outsmarting monsters, and tricking people. In general Odysseus is a hero because he displays epic hero qualities (traits) throughout Homer’s epic, the Odyssey. Odysseus shows a great deal of bravery throughout Homer’s epic. Odysseus is courageous when facing Polyphemous. Odysseus and his men blind Polyphem-ous, to get out of his cave that he has captured him and his men in. Odysseus states “If ever mortal man inquire, How you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye.” After blinding him he ties all his men to sheep, and holds onto one himself, so when Polyphemous goes…show more content…
Odysseus endures long years away from his loved ones, Penelope and Telemachus. Odysseus has been away from them for 20 years. After his long journey Odysseus finally returned home, he had to disguise himself as a peasant, while knowing his wife and children who he hasn’t seen for 20 years are standing right in front of him. “Now from his breast into his eyes, the ache of longing mounted, and he wept at last, his dear wife, clear and faithful, in his arms, longed for as the sun-warmed earth is longed for by a swimmer spent in rough water where his ship went down under Poseidon’s blows, gale winds and tons of sea.” This quote explains that Odysseus has been waiting for an extremely long time for Penelope to be in his arms again.
