Perfect Candidate Through an extravagant journey with unforgettable tragic action, Homer’s The Odyssey could be nominated for one of the grandest adventures ever told. And how could this legendary adventure even be considered worthy of this lofty description if the protagonist, Odysseus, had not been the ultimate and definitive epic hero. The debatable concept here is whether this admirable man could be considered for such a title. Defined by so many prestigious attributes, courage, loyalty, and nobility, as well as integrity and perseverance, he is the cream of the crop. The mighty Odysseus, possessing all of these traits, proves he is worthy of being called an epic hero throughout his wondrous journey on the way back to Ithaca. From the start, Odysseus had his goals set. Getting back home was noticeably the highest priority. Even as he was trapped on an island with the beautiful goddess Calypso, Odysseus expressed the importance of returning home. “Gracious goddess, don’t be cross with me! I know all as well as you do. My wife is nothing compared to you for beauty, I can see that myself. She is mortal; you are immortal and never grow old. But even so, I long for the day of my home-coming. And if some god wrecks me again on the deep, I will endure it, for I have a patient mind. I have suffered already many troubles and hardships in battle and tempest; this will only be one more” (Homer 66). Not only did Odysseus leave a perfect and gorgeous goddess, but his reason was to return to his imperfect, earthly wife. Loyalty is clearly evident in this situation. Odysseus could have easily stayed on a deserted, remote island with nothing but tropical waters and a goddess who was madly infatuated with him. Despite the glory in continuing on paradise, he denied himself and portrayed the mannerisms of an epic hero who was true to his obligations and commitments. With
