Travis Sabatino 11356491 HIST 121-02 Shen Fu: Six Records of Floating Life Context Shen Fu’s Six Records of Floating Life is a true story that took place during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), the last dynasty of Imperial China. Specifically, the story takes place in the late 18th century to the early 19th century China, which was the when the Qing dynasty was at the height of its power and influence. In this book analysis of the Six Records of Floating Life, an in-depth comparison will be made of concepts learned from class with important happenings from the story. An important concept from the Qing dynasty lecture that will be analyzed from the story is the Chinese class system. This analysis will hopefully show you, the teacher, that many connections can be made between the material learned from lecture and the primary sources that we are assigned to read. Summary Six Records of Floating Life was an attempt by Shen Fu, “a government clerk, painter, occasional trader, and tragic lover”, to recollect the significant events of his life. Unlike many stories common to the west, this one was not written in a chronological style of events, but instead four important topics of Shen Fu’s life were chosen and followed through one at a time. The four of six original topics from the book were “The Joys of the Wedding Chamber”, “The Pleasures of Leisure”, “The Sorrows of Misfortune”, and “The Delights of Roaming Afar”. Shen Fu considered each one of these topics major happenings in his life. The first topic or chapter was “The Joys of the Wedding Chamber”. This chapter mainly highlights the marriage he shared with his wife Chen Yun; so it is basically a love story.
